Simpson Helmet Restoration?
« on: April 24, 2012, 05:45:55 PM »
I was rummaging around in the garage after lunch and came across my old Simpson helmet that I bought over 30 years ago. I found a couple of visors too. Anyway I went out for a ride with it on.  When I got home and took the hemet off, I had a bunch of old black foam stuck in my hair. The insides are coming apart! Does anyone know if they sell hemet liners or Simpson helmet parts. I searched the internet and didn't find anything for this model. I'm thinking of scraping out the old stuff but what do I put in its place!  Thanks in advance.

Well, other than the sentimental value to maybe hang it on the wall, you might as well just buy yourself a winter stocking cap for all the protection that thing will provide after all these years...

As for real help for your question, sorry, I got nothing...  :)

Yeah, I wondered about that. What's the expiration date on a helmet??? Its never been in a accident.

+1 on Kirkn's comments Pete, don't use that helmet for anything more than a flower pot. The styrofoam liner between the fibreglass shell and the soft foam cushion has a life of around 5 years, and after that, it sets like concrete and provides no "shock absorbtion" if you get spat down the road and your head smacks the pavement.

Just like you wouldn't ride on 30 year old tires, no matter how good they look, you'd be stupid to ride with a 30 year old helmet, no matter how cool it looks. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Hi Terry, I figured my 5 year old Shoei provided better protection but it was all the way in the house and the Simpson looked so cool. Well I guess it goes into the halloween costume box now!!! I still have my high school football helmet. I wouldn't wear that walking the dog!!! Since my helmet is 5 years old I should probably buy a new one.

No worries mate, to test the styrofoam liner, just jab your thumb into it. If there's a little "give" in it still, it might be OK, but if it's hard, it's buggared. I must check my Nolan flip front and my el-cheapo black open face, they're both probably over-due for retirement. Cheers, Terry. ;D

The expiration on NHRA helmets is about 5 years, or after they have an impact. Better than the two years on seat belts. I've got a few laying around too. I've been thinking about practicing pinstriping on them.

That's ridiculous Pete, I've only got a 10 dollar head but I really like my Nolan flip (made in Italy, not Asia) and I can still buy a cool looking high quality "Lid" for 150 beans, and I don't have to take it off to enter a gas station, or have a drink, or cigarette, (not that I smoke any more) etc.

Just my opinion of course, if you've got money coming outta yer butt, buy the Shoei, I've had 2 Shoei's and they're great helmets, but I can't understand why 2 :Brand Name" helmets with the same safety rating can be that far apart? It's a good thing that Nolan don't sponsor certain famous motorcycle riders, methinks..............   ;D

I know, I had helmet sticker shock!!! My last Shoei was $325, but that was 5 years ago. I don't have cash coming out of my butt so I will check out the Nolan flip and whatever else they have at the dealer. I bought the Shoei because I liked the way it fit. Thanks Terry!!  ;D ;D

Thanks brandEn, It looks pretty nice. I'll probably try some on to get the size right, then shop on line.

Kinda tight with colour selections aren't they?
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

I have a "Shoei" head but have never tried a Nolan on. Doesn't Casey Stoner wear one? Probably not the $150 dollar model linked though.
