I have to brag a bit about this.....lol
« on: June 09, 2006, 04:35:58 AM »
Ladies and Gentlemen.....

It never fails to amaze me some people's stupidity to the items that they possess....
I just picked up a 1973 500 Four for $150.00usd....  with very little work should be a running bike here very soon
The motor was "barn-locked"....(notice the usage of WAS, I got it unlocked and turning smoothly this morning)
The carb slides are frozen, but I don't forsee too much hassle with them
The bike included another fuel tank (with OEM paint and pinstripe, unfortunately w/o emblems)
When I popped the seat, the original owners manual and original tool kit (in a pristine bag) were in their proper locations.
sorry, I just had to brag...pics and updates on the project to follow

The pipes are not original...they are shorties, slant cut w/o baffles....must be loud as hell....

Why you call it "stupidity"? Probably he's bragging about how some #$%* bought a heap of crap for 150 bucks...

Probably you would have paid much more for it, but surely it was almost worthless for him. I can't understand why people complain when prices skyrocket, and brag when they screw somebody -not talking about you-. The seller sets the price as long as there is somebody willing to part with the money. I bought some years ago a bicycle for 6 euros. It was the same I had on my childhood; I would have paid ten times that, but the seller told me he was about to throw it away but decided to sell if for a symbolic price. He was happy and I was happy, end of the story.

Don't want to start a discussion but, who of you would advise a potential seller in such a way as "hey, tell you what, instead of 150 bucks I'm going to pay you 200 bucks because the bike is worth it"?

In Spain is still common that people picks up things besides trash bins. It used to amaze me but not anymore. Something besides a thrash bin means that, for the previous owner, the item was worth nothing. But it doesn't have to mean that for somebody else the item is trash. If he would be willing to pay for it but can get it free, what's wrong with it? What if people, apart from regular trash, could take things they no longer want to a given place, where everything would be free for the taking? I bet you it would be an empty place.

I recently gave away about 50 l.p's. Had sold some on eBay but the profit was not worth the time. Probably my friend will put them for sale and maybe some of them will sell for 100 or 200 bucks, who knows. My friend will wonder if I was stupid for not knowing what I had. But for me they were nothing more than a bunch of L.P.'s I already have on CD or no longer listen to.

Perhaps Ignorance would have been a better choice of words, but in the end, it's true that people often aren't terribly educated in terms of the value of the items they posses or are selling.

That being said, I have a bin full of various CB750 parts and two nice rims from a CB750F (spokes) that I'm having difficulty giving away.  I'm taking them to a swap meet next weekend and will leave them in the field for the squirrels if nobody wants them.

Perhaps Ignorance would have been a better choice of words, but in the end, it's true that people often aren't terribly educated in terms of the value of the items they posses or are selling.

I've had much better deals out of educated and wealthy people than the opposite. In general, educated people are more aware of the value of things, but are short of time and they can afford to sell cheap if they like the buyer. The last thing they want is to be taken as #$%*s. I have got good rebates, instead of pointing the bad things, saying "the bike is in good shape, it seems you have taken good care of it, and I can hardly find any blunder. I would love to buy it and I would surely would take good care of it, but now I can't afford to pay more than X". People would be more willing to reduce the price for somebody who would look after his vehicle than for somebody who arrives pretending to be mr. know-it-all and just pointing bad things trying to discourage the seller and get a good price.

On the contrary, "un-educated" people tend to think that they have a treasure and will ask much more money, and you won't be able to reduce the price because "they know the trick" and it's "take it or leave it". They saw a CB750 in a magazine cover and they think that the piece of metal that has been rusting for decades on the barn must be worth at least 5.000 and that there is people willing to part out with such sum. Sadly, instead of asking for a reasonable amount, when they see they can´t get what the believe to be a killer deal -for them- they prefer to throw it away, making sure to destroy it to bits so nobody can get use of it. That gives an idea of what did they really thought it was worth...

Just my 2 cents.

Sorry I've missed this thread - squirrels haven't finished building the bike, so the parts haven't really been picked through (although there may be nuts in there now).

I read in another forum that one of the people there had a huge clam shell (the size of two basket balls) that wanted to get rid of. He put it in the street but the trash man won't take it. The wife asked to give it a try and listed on eBay, and it sold for about 400 bucks.  A man's floor is another man's celing, and a man's garbage is another man's treasure.

The other say we were having a stroll with the kids and saw, besides a trash can, a dismantled cabinet. You know, you can buy in places like Ikea -I hope you know- a cabinet in kit form, that you assemble yourself. This one was dissassembled but seemed everything was there, and almost new. I didn't need it but I knew it would not last long. I told my wife: "Listen, if I pick it up and some of the neighbours spot me  I would be considered a moocher. But if we just pass by just a moment before the previous owner left it here, and pick it up from his hands, everything would have been different"

Don't you agree?

One of my many "scores" was a French Box easel that I found at the transfer station (rubbish dump). Lugged it home and gave it a coat of wax and sold it for over $150......A man just drifts off to sleep laughing to himself....Most people have no idea of what they have. Bought a toy last month for NZ $300 and sold it for over $US 600. Our dollar is worth US .62 at the moment. Money for Jam, as they say in old Blightey....... :D

Nice lookin' K1 there Raul, I would like to nominate you for bike of the month!!   Have you been nominated yet?

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"
