Faded air box paint? or dye??? 750k4
« on: April 24, 2012, 05:13:58 PM »
I have a slightly faded and scratched air box. I was just wondering what would be the best way to refinish it. I dont like the paint idea as it will prob scratch. Thinking some sort of plastic dye might be better. Thoughts?

A lot of guys use Maquiers Back to Black with good results. Won't repair your scratch, though.
I'm amazed how good mine looks after 38 years.

I painted mine with plastic paint, think was rustoleum. Came out looking brand new, four years later it still looks like new (I haven't installed it yet, ha, ha).

I used a satin black plastic paint and it's worked out ok so far.  Gloss black shows to many imperfections.

I would think some of that stuff that restores the plastic headlight lenses would remove the oxidized plastic surface. Unlike paint the color of the plastic goes all the way through.

I am restoring my 750F and when I got to the stash box under the seat I cleaned it in my parts washer with kerosene. It's soft plastic kinda like my air cleaner box. It left the years of wear and tear scratching/abrasions a whitish color. I got out my almost forgotten can of Penetrol and applied the first coat. Better after drying but not good enough. Second coat good but I'll probably rub in a third coat.

Penetrol is really good Jerry. Try it on the frame.

I'll give it a try on the take-off bike #2 but not on my double powder coated frame  ;)
