$300 CB750--would you do it? (Pictures inside)
« on: April 26, 2012, 10:06:01 AM »
So I just went with a buddy of mine to look at an old Rickman trailbike he was thinking of buying from a local old-timer, since he mentioned he had some hondas in his garage too that I might be interested in.  Turns out it was a CB750, and he said I could come get it for $300 (I offered him $200, he countered $400, and settled at $300)

Pics first, then back-story:

Short answer: Yes.

Long answer: If the tank isn't rusted to pieces, it's worth upwards of 80 bucks by itself, assuming you're just looking at making money on it. The seat looks amazing. Interesting stacks on the carbs, but those may be a curse as unprotected carb throats may be corroded. The lack of a clutchpack makes me a tad nervous as well.

So the bike has been sitting since about 1984 right where you see it.  It's a climate-controlled garage in a very nice house, and there's not a lot of visible rust.  Forks look pretty clean, too.  The back story is this:

He had a chopper with this motor in it (didn't know what year, but I'm guessing '73 or '74), but wanted to ditch the chopper and he bought the frame you see the motor in now from a local yamaha dealer without the motor in it and had his motor installed.

He says that the motor was totally gone through at that point and hot-rodded.  He says high compression overbore pistons, very tall cam, the works, all built by a reputable local hod rod engine builder for the drag strip.  It had an aftermarket clutch in it but he said the clutch went out while he was shifting gears one day due to the power.  At that time he parked it and it hasn't been fixed or driven since.  As you see from the pictures, the clutch is removed and needs to be replaced.  Other than that, the bike is pretty much complete.  The manufacture date on the neck tube is 5/'75.

Who can tell me what they think I'm looking at, here, and would you haul it off for $300, too?

Haha!  We did the deal on a handshake, I'm gonna go pick it up next week.  The bike is in a secret location :-)

Oh hell yes. But I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make it run. I would be suspicous of the trans. It's worth that anyway.
Get it home and call me. I'll take that old thing, you can make an easy hundred for your trouble.

So I'm pretty sure from the engine number it is a '73 K3 engine and a '75 F0 frame (by the build date).

There is an ever so slight dent/crease in the tank that you can see in the 3rd picture, and you can see the scratch in the paint in the 2nd picture.  Otherwise no blemishes on the tank and the seat is in pretty much perfect condition.  Clean without any decay underneath

If it has a title it's worth at least that much as a parts bike alone.
That case number is not a factory stamping.

And to clarify, I'm actually more interested in getting this piece running than parting it out.

You said,

"So I just went with a buddy of mine to look at an old Rickman trailbike he was thinking of buying from a local old-timer, since he mentioned he had some hondas in his garage too that I might be interested in.  Turns out it was a CB750, and he said I could come get it for $300"

That is why he said $400.  HE was teaching you a lesson.

He offers you this great price and you try to cheat this old timer out of $100!!!!
What is wrong with you????
Just the engine frame and wheels are worth that much easily!!

Maybe you don't deserve it. After all you would have to clean it and do some work.

It was not sitting behind a barn in the weeds and rain.

Lighten up Lucky. The world revolves around barter. The "old guy" doesn't sound too slow to me.   :)
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Jeez, talk about guilt trip!!!

Listen, this old timer has a farm, a gigantic house in the suburbs of Macon, a 600+HP camero and three other cars in his garage!  I'm just doing him a favor by making more room for him!  HAHAH

The clutch parts may be laying around? Ask for them.
But of coarse you already tried to cheat him out of $100 so he may not have the enthusiasm to look for the parts for you.

Yeah he says he has the clutch somewhere.  Said it was aftermarket with a few extra disks in it or something.  Seriously, go easy on me, I am not trying to cheat anyone, I just know what it will cost to put her back on the road the right way (this isn't my first rodeo), and I'm not trying to part it out.  I've been wanting a 2-up bike to complement my baby four...

Does anyone know what pipe it's got on it?  He said it was chrome at one time but is now painted black.  It's 4-into-1 with a reverse cone megaphone type muffler.  They look to be in good shape.
