Could be old HT wires, condensation on the points? Do you have the stock airbox on?

I had this same problem on my 550.  Turned out to be a bad gaket on the points cover allowing water to get into the ignition points.

My 550  used to cut out in the rain on the 1 and 4 (outboard) cylinders. Stopped when I replaced the coil and plug wires.

I made a gasket out of neoprene, as the cork is good for one installation at best, even then, it seems prone to letting the the points get wet.

Is it possible that water is getting in the spark plug boot causing it not to fire?

I replaced my HT leads a long time ago and haven't had a misfire in the wet since.

Wet HT wires could also be shorting to the engine block. If changing your points gasket doesn't fix the issue, get a spray bottle of water, find a dark spot, start her up and wet the plug wires. Look for any sparks jumping from the wires to the block.

I had a CB750F2 many years ago that had the same issue - would ride great in the dry and then when it got wet would ride terribly till it dried out. Not good when riding from Paris to Alsace with the French g/f on the back. Tried everything - replaced the coils, HT leads, spark plug boots, points cover gasket etc etc...never did find the problem and sold the bike in the UK before coming to Boston.

Let us know how you solve it!

good luck
Andy

With all respect, I'm not convinced. A coil is a very simple thing and doesn't end it's life so easy and certainly not two at the same time. Moreover I don't see how playing the choke can help to keep your motor running as you mention in your initial post when the coils are really bad.
Are you sure the problems occur in fog too?
Or is it mainly on wet roads?
K3 owners should be aware of problems in the wet related to the 4 carb vent tubes. Remedy: cut two inches of these tubes. Not saying this is your problem, but there have been various reports, and they all concerned K3s.
