Sheetmetal parts
« on: April 25, 2012, 04:06:36 PM »
So while working on my bike I realized there were quite nasty and thought I would replicate them at work. I am a CAD designer during the day and figured the facilities at my work would be perfect for making some battery boxes and electrical panels. The panels I make will be aluminum and can be powdercoated black if needed (I know I'll be doing mine). I might use the stock rubber and hardware, but more likely I'll get new stuff (and easier to source) from mcmaster/ace.

Is there any interest in these parts? I have no idea how many people would need something like this, just planning on making some things for myself and figured I'd see if others would like to get in on this. Any ideas for other parts? Dimension changes to fit better non stock batteries? Want one even?

Here is some of the stuff we do at work, it's a medium production sheetmetal facility that specializes in street signs and traffic control devices, but does anything and everything sheetmetal.

I hope to have some pictures after finals are over. I'll at least have a few screen captures of the model in a week I hope.

What a great offer to make to your fellow forum members!  However, I'm guessing things like stock battery boxes may be hard to market because those parts are fairly easy to find on ebay used and refinish with some sandblasting and powder coating.  And of course, custom parts for smaller batteries and whatnot are probably going to have to be different for every bike...

But I like where you're going with this--It's good to know we've got folks out there willing to do some custom fabrication when the need arises!  Just my two cents...

Thanks, I was just getting the word out. Not necessarily looking to do it to be profitable or anything, just trying to make a few components that would look nicer than the stock parts. Figured while I was making one or two for myself and my roommate I might as well extend the offer.

+1

Even though I probably won't be able to take advantage of it at this point in time, I love that when I have the time/gumption to start a rebuild of my bike, there are members who are offering to share their expertise and craftsmanship.  Cheers to you, coaster!
