'77 CB550F Brake Drum - Help/advice wanted
« on: April 26, 2012, 02:41:16 PM »
Hi all,

Basically the brake liner in my rear drum is complete junk, it's oval, it's cracked and it's beyond the servicable limit.

What I want to know, and haven't been able to find a solid answer to, is can the old liner be machined out and a new one made and fitted?

I've seen one other post talking about the hubs being cast around the liners making replacement impossible but I don't know if this was for a 550. Has anyone done this repair or have any words of wisdom on what I can do to fix it?

Any help is going to be hugely appreciated on the topic. Photos and experience if you have 'em. Thanks in advance.

Vin Here is a bump. Also just what is it that is cracked? A photo would help.

I've never heard of anyone replacing the drum. I believe the alloy hub was cast onto an iron brake drum but can't say for sure, I've never ripped one apart to see how it's made.

For now I think getting a good used hub or entire wheel should be relatively easy and you should look into it.

But I'd also like to know if anyone has heard of relining a hub. Used parts will get scarcer and scarcer.

Thanks for the replies. Ken, apologies for no photos, I've been away from the workshop whilst trying to find answers. The part I'm talking about is the cast iron liner that the brake shoes work against inside the hub. Cracking and going oval are apparently common problems but I've found no one that has a solution so far.

Still all I really want to know for certain is how the liner is fitted, i.e. pressed into the hub or the hub cast around the liner.
