Pulling apart Tacho
« on: May 05, 2012, 09:50:54 PM »
Pulled my tacho apart and used the suggested fork to remove the needle. Oh,..oh.... Can someone confirm that the needle should come away from a male metal shaft...mine sprung out using fork leverage..but has a small metal stem on it..which I'm assuming is snapped off ..but is too small to see any evidence of such. can't see any way of re-inserting it - so am assuming the worst and it's nafooed..any hope? The pic shows the needle sitting on the base - sorry a bit of glare...

Note: posted this is Tips & tricks by mistake - so just removed it and pasted it here.

You're right; it's broken. Time for a new tach. Never heard of the fork method; two spoons will do the ttrick, normally. Sorry.

Yeh - I knew it....but I might as well put it right apart and see what possible miracle I can perform...before breaking out the cash on a new one...

can you make a tiny sleeve to join it,maybe even some small electrical shrink wrap?

Gidday Dave,
Maybe the sleeve will work. But the broken stem looks like its only about 1mm diameter. The stem that broke off in the needle is fatter (about 2mm and tapered) and has the actual sheered off shaft INSIDE that  shaft!
I have to 1st work out how to break open the little "motor" box to get to the hidden shaft where it's broken...and a sleeve and/or some form of glue/metal expoxy might work - as this thing has no load it spins as lightly as a feather.
At least I can't fook it any worse by trying.
Regards
Mark

the shrink tube stuff should make the step down in size ok,it also has a glue inside the tube that melts then resets when it cools.

OK - I'll look at doing that Dave....already busted the thing open with brute force. No way I could find to get it apart..seems to be factory pressed together top and bum. Wrenched it open and got to the broken shaft. Have cold welded the tit back onto it's shaft..micro-surgery stuff. Once hard..I'll sleeve it with shrink and see if it goes back together!
