Kinda upset ..waiting on my bike ..
« on: April 27, 2012, 08:28:20 PM »
K so I was getting down to the end of my bike fund.. around 400$. I needed a few things down with my project that I just couldn't do and or don't know how and wanted it done properly and clean..and well done.
I needed the new gold chain put on, I needed the brakes bleed and connected to my new brake master cylinder, my aftermarket cafe seat needed to still be mounted, carbs syncd and all wireing done, as well as the headlamp hooked up and rear brake hooked up all at once. Everything was basically on and just needed to be done.  Sucks now. It's been a month and I still won't get my bike back till next week maybe. He gets upset when I ask well.... What's going on?? I have no insight of how much has been done? The time? Where is the bike at ? He got lil upset at me when I nagged him and said " I will tell you when its done". Well so then I didn't bother him for week. He finally texted me bike is runing and sounds mean! Well that's sweet! I'm glad to hear its at least doing well. Uhmmmmmm how about the other stuff..well I get no info. I know he's a good side bike worker ..he works on bikes part time.. i was told he's a full time teacher.. told this by a older vintage bike guy that's reputaable and has a few hondas and done some work for him. Well and he only charges 30$ hr. Sweet u know that beats 75$ hr or so. Plus he said some things arent on correctly and it is dangerous to ride the bike.. and no one would touch it .. well I know I could have taken the bike to badger cycle Honda and the guy has all the parts for it and has been working on old honda bikes besides new ones in his shop for 20 plus years.. he mounted and trued my wheels perfect. But.... He charges 65-70 $ hour. I would have paid an ARM n leg there but I know it would have been done that week for sure. Now here I am still anxiously waiting and get no word on progress of it. Would this make you upset or is this pretty much my fault? He does good work but its all pt I think. I just wish he would give me some better progress details. I'm kinda over anxious and just getting a lil upset. I asked yesterday if the bike would be ready by next week ..gettin warm up in Wisconsin next week ..I wanna finally ride it.. he said ... Should be. Would this bother you? Or is this my fault? I think its my fault.

Sounds like you are getting what you paid for - a cut rate deal from a part timer. Of course, we're going to tell you you should have done it yourself.
But the bad communication part is BS, he should give you an update when asked. Communication is key, these things should have been discussed when you dropped off the bike.

I know I am but I fugured maybe 2 weeks at the max .  He told me last week that he had 3 hours in and 3 more needed to be done.. well.... That was last week.. 3 hours? Like wouldn't a Saturday or Sunday get that done? Or a random evening?? It just mad me upset that yesterday he says " it should be done" :^\
I know I did 90% of the restoration
But these few things I just can't do.  I figured he would do it simply since he does these bikes all the time. I just didn't want to try and wire up everything over to a new setup and some how try and sync and Attach the chain and have never done this before.... I don't want to be at work and or dead on the highway because something I did wasn't right. I know I paid for what I get done but he charges 30$ hr ...it just helps me out. If I got the bike back by this week waiting 3 weeks to save me few hundred is worth it.. but now I'm just tired of waiting.

I don't know that I would trust his work all that much..it all sounds a bit half-assed.  There is nothing there that's all that complicated especially if you have done so much yourself already.  Even the wiring is simple on these bikes if you just take a bit of time to think it all through and take it step by step.   It's a bit late for that at this point but take it as a lesson and learn to do it yourself from here on out.  Myself, I am not sure I could find someone I trust to work on my bikes and not screw it up or be able to do the work to my satisfaction, especially a cut rate hack who works out of his backyard.  If he can't pull off these simple tasks in a reasonable amount of time that's all he is.  Sorry for the tough love. ;)

hold on now...that actually is a lot of time consuming stuff...hooking up all the wiring?...3 hours at least right there...brake bleeding?...that doesn't always go as quickly as planned now does it...mounting a cafe seat?...that could involve all sorts of issues...especially when you're dealing with somebody else's possible mistakes and they are paying you to get it right....plus quite frequently after working all day, guys don't want to do a  dang thing...I do agree this all should have been discussed before hand

most of us are backyard hacks,i think i can safely say it wont be perfect when you get it back either,,they always need a little fettling or shaking down to figure out any unforseen things that occur?just dont upset the guy before its handed over and itll have a better overall finish.

I do agree sb41 with what you say, I just wish I would have more communication that's all. A friendly status update. I mean if I wouldn't have asked I honestly don't think he would have said anything...so after a month I'm just waiting and have no reply. So, I'm not going to try and piss him off and have him drop the bike half done.. all I'm asking is for some simple communication.
* when he picked up the bike he said he had 3 other bikes in front of mine that needed some work, he said prob
Couple weeks. And I do still agree with your comment about things take time  and yes that seat was a #$%* to try and install..I couldn't do it , so I'm letting him give it a whirl. I don't want to give him a bad name pregame but if it were me and I had someones bike for over a month I think they would be getting a bit upset with me..and I would be giving communication every few days about what's going on though.

Patience is a virtue.  You sent your bike out because there were things you didn't feel comfortable doing.  That is understandable but imagine this scenario...  If you had taken on these tasks yourself one at a time and used the forum to get thru each one to ensure the safety and reliability of your machine, you would know that every peice of your bike is correct.. You would also be looking at your bike right now.  The things you mentioned aren't difficult to do and honestly once he's done, you really dont know if the guy did the stuff right or not.

He might be doing other things as well.  I am not defending the guy.

I get a ticket to fix someones problem on their PC at work and they trip out if I am not at their desk within 20 minutes of their call.  Well, that call goes through someone else first before it gets to me, I have 20+ other tickets in my queue (some high priority issues, those are first), plus other things I need to do.

It is like they think I am sitting there at my desk chewing my nails and watching IT Crowd just waiting for something to do.  Yanno, those naggers end up getting pushed back deeper in my queue and have to wait longer.

I know I do good work and I am very thorough.  Just because it would take me longer to get to that person or take a bit longer to fix the issue does not mean the quality of my work is bad.  Now, If I get rushed too much to finish something, I am gonna miss something because I will not be as thorough as I wanted to be.

I am not saying this is the case with your issue.  Just something to consider.

I am not sure that a bigger shop that charges more would "get it out fast" "this time of year", thet tend to make newer bikes a priority.

This guy is a part-timer that does this on the side, unless you got it in writing that your bike would be done by X date then you wait until he is done- plain and simple.
This is why you got the cheaper hourly, it comes at a cost- your time.

All these things you had this guy doing were things you could have done yourself save the seat mounting, sometimes that takes a little fabricating to get them on.

I dunno about the seat fabbing but the rest is easily doable. There's some good videos on youtube for some of it. If I had more free time right now i would say trailer that baby over here and we could have a little wrenching party with some of the other members in the area and get you on the road lickitysplit.

man I wish. Well I asked my buddy that knows everything about bikes to come help.. I would pay him. He said you don't need to pay me..I will help ya. Well he came over looked at it, smoked a cigg and said hey ill stop by tmrw ..gonna go ridein and well... That was no fukn help. So now I'm just upset. Yes I should have tried doing the rest myself, I've learned from this to not let some ya hoo take my bike and just never know when its going to be done. I'm now just upset. But yes I know its my fault and live and learn. I should have tried to wire that up myself ...it just looks like a space ship with all the new hookups, plus I don't know how to correctly put the chain on and remove the links, the seat I just couldn't get it to fit right and don't know how to bleed brakes.
I just want to tell the dude just bring it back and ill take it to the shop at badger cycle. Fml

I didn't know how to do any of the things you just mentioned before I owned my bike- well, I knew how to bleed a car brake line, that's about it.
I learned all I know from here, reading the manuals and asking questions. This stuff is not rocket science as long as you have some money to acquire a few tools along the way.

#16 you forgot a few things.
 READ and FOLLOW directions.

Bring an EXTRA dose of PATIENCE..
...
You cannot learn things the first time, and have it go quickly.. and when it comes toreading procedure.. READ..read..and REread.. preferably over 2 days.. or hours before you start.. make sure you understand the procedure, BEFORE you start.. if you get befuddled STOOP.. take a break.. reREAD, and try again.. and come on here and ask for help.. but have the patience to wait for the good advice you will probably gedt..
Hope you got a place the bike can safely be apart a few day... good luck..

i think it depends if the guy looks at you as a nuisence or some one in need of a hand... alot of times i try to play off my impatience(when i was paying part timers to do my work) ... the best way i can put it... is kinda like a little kid excited about his birthday... like extatic about your bike getting done and that this guy is doing it for you... if you havent burnt any bridges try not to.. because its good to have someone like that around

not trying to be a jerk, but there's an old saying that i always see on signs at car repair shops:

WE DO WORK 2 OF 3 WAYS:  QUICK - CHEAP - GOOD.
- if it's QUICK and CHEAP, it won't be good.
- if it's GOOD and QUICK, it won't be cheap.
- if it's CHEAP and GOOD, it won't be quick.

really, though - it does suck that he's taking so long.  just remember, you catch more flies with honey, and being nice is going to motivate the guy to work on it better than if you piss him off.  also, i've found that randomly dropping by to view the progress is a great motivator for people.  ;)

good luck!  i'm sure you'll be on the road quicker than you think.

EDIT:  i see that this post was redundant -- apologies!  but it *is* true...
