Cost of Powdercoating Frame, Swingarm etc.
« on: April 28, 2012, 05:08:55 PM »
Do prices vary much across North America? I've just started to look for a provider and was quoted $150.00 - $200.00 to powdercoat the frame from the first company that responded, here in Saskatchewan.

Seem reasonable?

Here's the bike I'm tearing down... also, any recommendations on how to restore the Henry Abe wheels?

I just got quoted $275 near Pittsburgh pa. That included sandblasting then powdercoating the frame, swingarm, and seat pan.  Also, are there any items I should consider getting done such as the battery box or the electrical board?

I got mine done for around 130, which "included sandblasting". I had already stripped off the old paint too, which was a mistake. WHy you ask? he DID NOT SANDBLAST IT!!  my frame now scratches super easy, and I see the smooth metal on the exposed areas. bastard.

Think I paid around $250 to blast and coat all things black on my F. That included a base coat and a clear coat.

Got quoted $500 for JUST the frame from one place. Never going there :P

Got a quote for $250-300 for frame/swingarm + maybe some small parts from the popular place.

This is Hawaii, where everything is more expensive.

Every place around me wants $250 just to pc the frame.  That does not include any bead blasting.  Luckily I have a buddy that ownes a pc company and is going to do the vast majority of my parts for $225 provided I help in the prep work.  I have already bead blasted the parts so all that is left is some more cleanup and taping off.

Interesting... I've never had anything powder coated before so should the parts be sand blasted, base coated, powder coated and then clear coated? I'm not sure if my quote includes all those processes, although I can find out. Before I do, are they ALL required? Does the base and/or clear coat make it stronger and last longer?

Hi,I have access to media blasting and pc. I am not a pro just an enthusiast like everyone here. My way ,clean any oil/grease,blast, wash,pc and last a light clear coat.Never had any problem so far. If you plan on doing multiples check eastwood co or hf portable s/b and p/c.

The same company quoted me $60.00 a wheel to powder coat the old Henry Abe wheels. I'm thinking they would look best refinished as they came originally, black and alloy coloured. I'm not sure if that's possible with the powder coat process... thoughts?

Just a thought, how about just painting the black parts on the wheels and then applying a urethane clear coat to preserve it?

Great idea! I WOULD like to keep them as stock looking as possible. How and what would you use to restore the black parts? Can they powder coat just the black parts or it that too finicky?

Take off your frame tag and leave it at home. I paid in the middle of that range.

I remember reading something about powder coating aluminum wheels on the XS650 forum.  Cast aluminum is often 356 T-6 and the "cure" temp is around 325.  Powder coat curing is often done at what 400-425.  Could this cause the aluminum to become brittle?  Powder coat curing can be done at lower temps but takes longer.  Something to ask the folks doing the work for you.

I'm glad I read this.  I'm about to take in some stuff for powder coating this week and have one piece already stripped of paint.
I think I'll hit it with some spray paint just to make sure the coater actually has to sandblast it.

I'll ask. If the cure temperature is too high, or too finicky for powder coating, what's the next best way to touch up the black on these Henry Abe wheels?

You could still PC them just have them cure it at a lower temp.   Myself, I would just shoot it with some 2 part epoxy primer and then 2 part urethane.  Use a Preval sprayer if you don't have the compressor and paint gun.  Very durable paint but use a respirator as it has bad stuff in it.

Just talked to a guy here in Seattle, will blast and coat frame, triple tree and swingarm for 175.  He said you don't want to powdercoat the head because he recently did it on a harley and it encapsulated the heat too much so they had to remove the powdercoating.  Everywhere else I talked to was ~300.
