CB750 timing issue
« on: April 29, 2012, 05:20:39 AM »
Is it possible for the timing to change drastically once the engine has gotten up to temp. I took my CB750 out for a test ride after some carb work and once it got to temp it died and acted like it was WAY out of time. This has been a problem since I got it back together. I thought it was electrical at first but it has a new OEM battery and reg/rectifier. I am running a Dyna S ingnition with Dyna 3 ohm coils. Could this be the timing advance plate? Thanks. I am completely stumped.

Can you check the timing with test light after the engine is warmed up?

I checked it with a light but it might not have been warm enough to recreate the problem.

Describe what you mean about it running like it was mistimed?  The Dynas have been known to drop 2 cylinders when they get really warmed up. It seems to happen to units sold in the last few years. When it was cool it was normal.

for lack of a better description it sounds like it can't turn all the way over like the internal parts aren't working together. I know it isn't hitting inside because when cool, it starts right up and runs great. Last night after it cooled down, it cranked right over and started as if nothing had happened. Maybe it is the Dyna ignition. Although even when hot and right up to the time it quits, it seems to run fine. At first when it dies it won't turn over like the battery is dead. After it starts cooling, that's when it starts this timing issue.
