Broken Carb Throttle Rod
« on: April 30, 2012, 10:32:50 AM »
I'm slowly picking away at my K1 project and got to disassembling the carbs yesterday....everything was an absolute breeze. The bike has been sitting since 1985, and I was able to pull the float pins out with my fingers!

Anyway, the slides from carbs 1, 2, and 4 also came out surprisingly easy. However, when I went to remove the #3 slide, the throttle rod was sheared off right at the bottom (in the area circled in red in the picture) and just pulled right out. I was able to still remove the slide with relative ease, so it wasn't stuck. I'm just wondering how it would have broken in the first place....perhaps this could be the reason the bike was parked in the first place.

Anyone have any idea how this piece could have broken? Is this a common problem?

It is unusual. It can be TIG welded. Not a problem.

It probably happened when somebody tried to pry the throttle open with the lifter while the slide was siezed in the carb body.  That was just the weakest link.
