Two comments/suggestions:

  • I've read on this site that a number of people have slow leaks in the float valve, and suggest turning off the fuel when the bike is off.
  • Be careful with some of the bay air filters.  Also reported on this site are some that "claim" to the genuine Honda, but turn out to be crap (too restrictive).  I recommend a genuine Honda filter, or a K&N.

Are you in the habbit of shutting off the fuel every time you stop...

Yes, the fuel was shut off.  Also, I always do, and if I start it after a short period (like this was), I don't turn it back on until the bike is running.

Yes, I plan to go the K&N route.

Thanks guys!

I was initially going to recommend new condensors, but when you said you removed the air filter, I killed the thought.

But . . . if the time spent on removing the air filter let the bike cool down some, condensors may still be suspect.  I've read about condensers failing when hot.

Lastly - not related to your problem, I recommend checking your spark plug caps for resistance.  These also fail over time, and for me, they were cheap enough just to replace them all, rather than fight future ignition related issues . . . .

The K/N air filter is in, but the bike still has issues starting when FULLY warm.  Carbs were back off to adjust the floats one more time; test ride later today to see how it works now.

I think I had it too rich, the air filter did help and it was easier to start, but not where I wanted it. The floats are still higher than the factory setting, just not as much.

MUCH better starting now.  Bact to where I know that I will be fine if I shut it off somewhere other than home.

Seems to like the new filter and settings, and RUNNING it is making it run better.  15 or so years of sitting; it needs to run.  So far I have put 200 miles on it, with 60 or so today.  The acceleration is sooooo much better now too.

BTW: I might have found a new home for the A, or at least a temporary one for it.  My buddy broke his neck in a freak accident at home in October.  He was into motorcycles when he was younger, and until today he did not tell me that before the injury he was planning to buy a new bike this past spring.  The injury put that on hold because he has weakness in his left arm and hand.  I told him that I about the A and if he wants to buy it or just ride it, come get it; he wants to check it out.

Had to rebuild the ignition switch.  Wanted to take it to a show last night, but as I turned to leave my driveway it died.  After some investigation and testing, the switch was the problem.  Never did one before, but not that hard, and I found the problem when I was in there.  Fixed with a hammer!!

Well past the 400 mile mark now, still love kicking around town (until I sell it).
