Help me figure out which filter my cooler uses
« on: June 09, 2006, 05:48:17 PM »
I have a oil cooler that looks like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-CB500-CB550-CB750-CB-750-Oil-Cooler-Kit-NEW_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35580QQitemZ4641838379

It came whith my bike. I have not been able to find a replacement filter  ???

This is the last hurdle to get my bike on the road for the first time. I'm very excited!

Please let me know if any dimensions would help.

Thanks!

Actually that looks like the old one that I have for my project bike, Terry probably used one like it for the prototype. .  Anyways these plates are designed to work with the stock oil filter cover and internals . . .there should be a hollow internally threaded adapter bolt that holds the plate to the engine using a stock filter case oring to seal it and then the stock filter case and internals fit on top using the original oil filter bolt which screws into the hollow threaded adapter bolt.

No guru here, I just followed the link and saw it was coming out of "Melbourne Australia, Mate!, Australia" & the description ended with a "Cheers, Terry".

csendker- You were right about that being Terry's, so I modded my post so I wouldn't look stupid :)  Still, it  uses a stock filter setup which was the question . . . .

Yup....That's Terry's fer sure and I want one!!!! Terry....answer this post cause I also have more questions about it.The main thing is that the picture shown on your bike has those criss-crossed headers and mine don't.Looks like you have alot more room to keep the hoses off of the exhaust. Will keep in touch with this post.

Are you certain you understand the install of your filter plate?  Typically the flat side of the plate goes out and the side with the oring groove (shouldered?) would go towards the engine.  Perhaps your setup is a bit different but in that case you would need to show a picture.  Terry shows his plate with both a stock filter and a spin on type installed on it.  The spin on would seem to be the type that is dress up item and a direct replacement for the stock setup.

Here's a pic of Terry's unit (an early one). He changed them a little in regard OD etc. I use a Fram TG3682. It is a premium filter with a better bypass system. I think it is no more expensive than a CB OEM filter and is definitely cheaper than OEM spin ons.

That looks like one of the old Derale or Lockhart units. Someone put a threaded piece in there for use with a spin on filter but you have to get one with the right gasket OD. If you take the threaded pipe out you should be able to use the original filter cover, filter and bolt.

It does have a lockhart oil cooler. I don't have the stock parts. And yes, the problem is finding a filter with the right size gasket OD.
which filter fits? I've been to 3 autoparts stores (wrecked their shelves) and 3 bike shops (incuding a harley dealer)

Another probem is the depth. Because of the long nut, the filter has to have it's threaded recessed to clear it.

Yeah...I can see how the nut would prevent a flush fit. Like I said, the OEM filter housing and associated parts should bolt up no problem. You'd probably be better off with that.

Any one have a stock setup for sale? Any reccomended sites? I need closure to this project.

Thanks everyone!

I do ( with a heavy duty oil bolt too).  I 'll look for it tomorrow as I'll be busy the rest of today. I know I have it though.

I bought a cooler setup off ebay that uses a filter from a volvo car.  I think it would fit on the stock filter mount as far as diameter, but that nut you have will not allow it to tighten... I'll go get the numbers off the filter for ya.  they are like 4 bucks a filter.   it is a fram filter PH2865A  this is for my 750, it's a short fat little filter...  Hope this helps
