CB550K exhaust gaskets
« on: April 30, 2012, 06:36:51 PM »
today i decided to change my exhaust gaskets on my CB550K and noticed the old gaskets looked nothing like the ones i ordered off bike bandit...which are copper ring shaped.  after replacing and putting in the new copper ones on, i noticed white smoke coming off the engine where the pipes connect when i started it.  what is causing this?  it's didn't smoke before i changed them.

thanks in advance,

John

the smoke will be greasey finger prints etc,as well as the new gasket itself somewhat.

When those gaskets were new, they probably didn't look too different from your current new copper gaskets.  It's just a crush gasket, so it takes the shape of the gap when you torque it down.  Like Dave500 said, it's just residual stuff burning off.  Give it a while, it should go away.  If not, maybe double check the specified torque to make sure it's properly sealed.

careful tightening down the exhaust studs they have a tendancy to pull out when over torqued.
