Well.....how 'bout stock airbox (with its built in velocity stacks), K&N (to filter), and secret holes (to open it up)

Now EVERYBODY can be happy!?!?

cool look.. but you accept the risk.   If engines didn't need air filter, it would be pointless to make air filters for them.

This is stupid. Of course airfilters serve a purpose. If I don't regularly clean my yz airfilter, my carb becomes disgusting and I'm sure it takes a toll on the cylinder walls, rings, and everything else inside. I mean do what you will but MY engine is only getting filtered air.

I have always run UNI type foam filters clamped over my stacks. Believe me, you need filters in the desert south-west! The attached pic is a small portion of the sand I flushed out of my filters after picking up Lefty (aka Godzilla V 2.0) in Joshua Tree. Mooshie, have your checked your filter???

Not yet. I am planning to take them off and power clean my pod filters today (funny you should ask).  I'm also changing the rear brake pads, new rear tire (should have done that before the ride  ;)), new throttle cable, and syncing the carbs.  I'm going to be busy for the next few days!

You will find "pads" won't fit in the rear brake but "shoes" will.   :P

Airborne dust as seen under a microscope.

Makes you want to take a deep breath, eh?

Take a piece of your uni pod filter and stick it up your nose for a week.
See what i mean?????   You will feel so much better.

You will live 10 years longer with filters up your nose.
WARNING Don't really do this!!!! (you know how things are these days)

I have been running for 40 years with no filter, and I live in new york city. I definitely notice a drop in performance, and some things are making more noise than they used to. But overall I still get up every day and do my thing. Still, I am nervous to take me on any long trips.

Power clean? If your pods use K&N style elements (wire mesh with cotton gauze) stay away from using any forceful water or air steams.

Power clean= shaking sand out by jumping up and down and waving arms rapidly about in circular fashion, then blasting with compressed air.  It's fancy girl terminology for brake-thing-a-ma-bobby.

Jumping up and down and waving arms rapidly is fine, but don't blast with compressed air. ;)

So much to learn, so little time...got it.  No compressed air.  But I really like to blast compressed air, hmmmm, guess I will just clean my computer keyboard.

I of course was kidding, and anyone who thinks you can run a motor without a filter is kidding themselves. You only need to stick your palm over a carb throat on a revving engine to realize how much air is being pulled into that carb. When that road grit enters that airstream it becomes a sandblaster as Jeff from Z1 showed. I also change the oil and filter to get the "clutch fibers" out of the engine.

I took some top end components to a local guy that builds racing engines.  He immediately spotted little scratches on the side of my pistons near the top and said, "See these little scratches?  That's what happens when you run without an air filter."  It was a PO thing as I always run a filter but it did enlighten me a little.

I think a few of you just got to man up and say "I wont run without filters".. and stop spreading ......
EXXXaggeerrrAAAAtttteeeddd DOOM & GLOOM.. about how bad it is "in your mind"...
Again not condoning it, but very few of you seem to have actually run a bike this way.. and the ones that have, are saying it wasnt as bad as people are telling them..

"Man up"???   What does all this have to do with being "a man"? I hate that term man up. It just strikes me as childish to tell someone else to be "a man" about something just because they disagree with your opinion.

Man up? Ok,I'll bite.  Dirty air is bad for an engine.Period.No arguing that. Even a child would know that...or do you have to be a man to know that dirt scratches? Hold on,is that right? No,you are supposed to be a "man" and admit that you would only run filters...that was it. Wait...but filters aren't needed and it would take a "man" of experience to understand this. I'm confused.

Simplified version.Cliff notes,if you will...dirty air is bad and will wear out an engine, carburetor, etc faster then clean air. It's not opinion, its science. Abrasive material...uhm...scratches stuff...who knew?!?!
The darn fool didn't know it couldn't be done...so he went ahead and did it anyway.

Let me put it another way, if anyone was offended.
If you dont know how bad it is, at least say so.. you either have experience running without or you dont..
