Who rides with rear sets on the street...
« on: May 01, 2012, 09:46:50 PM »
...and do you like them. I have a CB750 I Cafe'd and am still using my stock pegs. People are constantly telling me that it would be a lot more comfy with rearsets.I have "mocked up" rear sets on several occasions and never find it comfortable. I put my bike on the center stand and rested my feet on jack stands at various locations trying to find where to put them. But no matter where I put my feet it seems scrunched up and very uncomfortable.I am 6'3" and have a 33" inseam if that means anything.

What am I missing? :-\

And for what its worth, riding with clubmans and stock pegs is not all bad.I can rest my elbows on my knees while riding and it takes the load off my hands. After the first 75-100 miles the clubmans do work on the palms of your hands with you putting so much weight on them.I do have another seat of "pegs" that stick out from my rear lower shock mounts. I stretch out on those, chest and chin on the tank and can ride for a fuel tank of fuel in complete comfort like that. But the fumes from the gas cap wander into my helmet pretty bad at times :o

I have to admit that they do look freakin' cool! But before I go buy material to build a set I want to know it's worthwhile. Again,I'm not racing or just putting around town.I like to gout and ride for several hours at a time.Sometimes 200+ miles a day.

Any personal experience here? Thanks in advance!

I'm 6'3" too, when I put my feet behind the stock pegs in a rear set position, I cringe at the thought of riding 5 miles like that.  I have Norman Hyde M bars which place your hands in the plane of the riser (kinda like drag bar position).  Stock pegs for my legs.  I think rear sets are fine for guys that are 5'8" and don't want (or can't get) a girl holding on to them ;)

i have rear sets on this cafe bike, its a 78 SuperSport, for this bike they seem to be in the perfect position. not super agressive but decently placed.  The bars are ducati aluminums , so your not leaning quite so much. Im too old to lean for very long haha.  I need to re adjust the shifter,  its turned backward so i shift one up 4 down like a china knock off dirt bike :P

I'm on the fence as well.I keep both front and rear on.On the highway I put my feet on the rear pegs and lay forward a bit,I like having both.Maybe on my new build I'll put rearsets on it.sure it looks 'cooler but for a bike I am using for commuting and fun,not to mention a passenger if need be,choice is good.

Tarrozi makes killer-cool rear sets.  They're a little pricey at $300, but they bolt right on and work perfectly, no modifications necessary at all.  You can find them at www.fastfromthepast.com.  I have a set on a GS1000 Suzuki and would never go back to stock.  They're also very comfortable with superbike bars.

yeah, I'm only 5'8" and agree that the cb750 ain't too bad with clubmans and stock pegs.  To me it seems like the cb750 pegs are already located more rearward in relation to the seat compared to many bikes.  That being said I have mocked up some custom rearsets located roughly where some bolt on Tarrozi's would be and it felt perfect.  I just need to figure out how to fab some brackets/mounts and build linkages to finish my installation.  I have always been told you want your feet right under your ass, so if I sit way forward on the seat and put the balls of my feet on the stock pegs, as opposed to the insole, that's just about right...but then  the stock pegs are way wrong if I want to tuck in and slide back against the bumstop, plus I have to move my feet more to shift/brake.  Try a position just a little further back and a little higher...I see guys using the passenger peg mount on cb750s and that just seems way wrong...unless you got that really long cr750 tank...
If it works good, it looks good...

I whacked my pass peg triangles off,so thats not an option for me :( $300 is not an option,either...funds are low. Thanks for the link just the same. The Tarozzi's do look very nice, though.

I just looked through all of their honda listings and all of the 550 rear sets end in 1976. I find the back pegs more comfortable for riding.

look under tech on cb750,I think hondaman has a good alternative for rear sets for about 100.I'm not good with copying/pasting,but its what I may do when the time comes.

If your plams are getting sore with clubmans you are putting too much of your weight on the bars. You should be using your abs and back to hold your body up. Your riding will greatly improve if you get used to doing this.

Tango: Can you post a close up picture of the mounting brackets you have for each side?  Also, who makes those brackets?  Thanks.

Ill get some close ups tonight, the brackets are stock, my friend that built the bike modified the stock brackets. he added a foot peg where the rear brake lever attaches and shortened the brake lever. on the shifter side he modified it as well then just reversed the shifter toward the back.

im only 6'1 and feel comphy on the stock pegs too.
ive always wondered peoples height when they say the MUST have rear sets....
seems we should post our height when giving this type of advice
(according to my sister though when online if the man says he is under 6' subtract 1 to 2 inches to get his real height. taller men seem to give actual height)

Actually, to ride well you should be relaxed, not tensed up anywhere. I once rode an 1100 Katana about 1500 miles in a round trip in 2 days, my hands and wrists hurt after riding for about the first hour and continued for the rest of the trip, a lot depends on your size and weight as to how uncomfortable some bars are, i hate clubmans with a passion but love superbike bars, besides, if you go fast enough the wind on your chest will hold you up... ;D

Thanks for posting those pictures, tano911.  I was planning on doing something like that with my project so I'm glad to have a good example of it.

no prob,  he just took the stock brackets and made a few changes.  worked out pretty nice.  I rode the bike to vintage bike night last night, fun time.  I forgot to put a for sale sign on the bike. Ill have to do that at the rockers reunion in a couple weeks.

Honestly, if you can ride 200+ miles and not have any pain issues, don't bother even thinking about rearsets and stick with what you've got!  :D

With the first Cafe I built up, I used clip-ons and kept the stock pegs. I am 6'1 and would have liked to put rearsets on the bike. If I had kept it, I probably would have gone with Tarrozi's. BUT - That's ME and MY back. Your back may be different. Do you ever find yourself moving your feet on the pegs so that you just have your toes hanging on them? If so, try something that will be bolt on. If not, don't worry about it.  :)

Here are a couple of pics of my custom rear-sets. I rode two 325 mile days, back-to-back about 6 weeks ago, to ferry Lefty into AZ. ;)
