how to remove tires from wheels?
« on: May 02, 2012, 05:25:34 pm »
Can I remove the tires from my wheels from my 750, 18" and 19" on my own? I kind of tried with a screwdriver already with no success. I need to clean up the wheels and paint them and get some new tires. I might just cut these friggin tires off! They're junk anyways. Any tips before I go inhaling burning rubber?

Use Armor-All as a lubricant.  Tire spoons are better than screwdrivers.

Old tires get hard and they are a #$%* to get off. I have cut them off and that is fine. You will need some irons to put the new tires on and not put a hole in the tube. Soapy water or Windex is a good lube to mounting tires.

I have several tire irons like the ones pictured in the upper right. The biggest one is fairly new and I found it necessary for modern tires.

Thanks guys looks like I'll do whatever I can to get these old crusty tires off so I can work on the wheels. When I get new tires I'll have them mounted and balanced at a tire shop! I'll be replacing the tubes and everything anyways. Not sure you get the idea just HOW crusty these tires are LOL

+1.  I cut them off too.  I used to mount my own but it was just way too difficult for me.  I leave mount and balance to the local shop, I know a guy so they cut me a break.

Just took mine off both front and back so i could put new spokes on. Just used a utility knife to cut away down to the inner cable and then cut those with a dremel. The crustier the easier to cut with a utitlity knife....my forearm got a good workout:) Think I read elsewhere some people used a sawsawl

Like Bobby said, old tires are pain.I use 1) 2x4x6' 4) 2x4x8". Need a heavy object to use it as counter weight.Take 3pcs of 2x4x8" laid them on the floor on a circular fashion ,then place your wheel on top close to the heavy object (car, wood pile) Take the 6 footer pcs and place a tip under your object, take the small 2x4 left and place it between the long pcs of wood and tire. Before you apply downward force put one of your feet on the opposite end of the tire. A steel round pipe cut to 14"or so then hammer the tip grind it round . That how I change mine old or new.

I found that three irons worked best for getting the initial start of getting the tire bead over the rim edge.  But since you have no need to save these just cut around the circumference with a utility knife leaving just the bead.  That's the hard part to cut has it has wire embedded into the rubber but at least you have better access to cut it off.  When I do it this way I use a cable cutter with an overlapping cut (looks like a parrot beak) to get through it.

If you decide on going with the Sawsall method be sure to cover the rim with a protective piece of metal or something to avoid a 1/2 inch cut in the rim a.k.a. Spanner and Tugboat's efforts recently........ and we only had 1 or 2 beers which makes it un-excusable :o :D :D :) ;).

A regular hacksaw ,some elbow grease and a pair of snips to cut wire works every time as they are slower than a sawsall you dont have to worry as much about cutting your rims. trick is to cut two  diagonals across tire to give  you a trianglar hole to cut wire rim of tire I just cut a 36 yr old brick hard tire that way  thats my story and im stickin to it

The key to removing tires is to compress the beads to the center of the rim which allows more slack for the tire iron to work with. Extra hands or clamps work wonders! :)

Age has nothing to do with anything. I just find it funny that so much can be said about removing a tyre. I could do this task when I was around 6, nearly 8 years ago now.  :P

I use tire lubricant - got a gallon long time ago from pepboys - heavy object - myself cca 250  - to pop the bead and tire irons. Cheapest irons from local shop work well enough.
Cuttin is an option, but if you buy three irons, its faster just take them off whole.

Read 12, 20 21, and pick up irons(3 of them..then polish them.... I probably have the tire off (with irons)by the time you are ready to cut the beads...

I didnt check mine once last year and I put a scratch in my Morris mag.. pissoff.. just check for burrs with your fingers before using on aluminum rims..  I bought a gallon of Ru-Glde, its enough for at least 1000 tires...

Do NOT use screw drivers!!!!!
If you do the chance of pinching the tube is almost 100%.

Get tire spoons. Get 4 of them to make it easy on yourself.
