RE: 1976 CB750 Help Installing Dyna 3 OHM Coils
« on: May 03, 2012, 05:52:13 AM »
First much thanks to everyone for helping solve the clutch problems and installing the turnout MAC exhaust.  Now I need a little assistance mounting my Dyna 3 OHM coils.  I am having a problem with everything bunching up and am not sure the best way to mount.

If you have any advice or even better pictures it would be appreciated.

Nice job looks very clean with no wires?  That is one of the problmes the wiring harness uses up lots of space and the coils are smushed in there.  Thanks for the pic it definitely helps!  Are those factory coil brackets or special dyna brackets.  Also is that a condit clamp?

Thanks!

You will want to use resistors with those coils, my 3 ohm coils burned out my kill switch 30 miles out of town.
I didn't find out until after I installed them that 5 ohm coils are the optimal coils to use with this electrical system.

Thanks for the tip!  I have the resitor pack from HM I will be sure to install now.

Looks like a normal install to me.

I spoke with the Dyna guy day before yesterday as I was installing my Dyna 2000 ignition. Bikers gotta chat a bit, eh! We talked about my previous use of the Dyna III and the 3 ohm coils and the excess power consumption. He said it is NOT the Dyna III contributing to this but it IS the 3 ohm coils that are the culprit. Reason I mention this is the picture with the Hondaman resistor installed neatly. The Dyna guy is sending me a resistor (1.4ohm) he had laying around to install. Pretty nice freebie gesture especially considering I have a Hondaman resistor I have not installed yet. So for any doubters out there why not get one of Hondaman's resistors and cut back on the power consumption if you're having that dying battery effect?! On that note, I've had my Dyna 3 ohm coils on since 1983 and it has had no effect on my kill switch.

These are the original coil mounts that I polished. The clamp at the back is an aircraft conduit clamp, you could use the original honda one.
I modified the HM resistor bracket (cut slots in it) to fit it this way up.
You need to make sure there is adequate clearance between the coil screws for the Yellow and Blue points cables (mine not connected yet) and the mounting brackets.
I have not made my wiring harnesses up yet, I will be doing it from scratch.

its better to regret something you have done, than something you havent.Except playing with explosives.

Wow!  That is one sick battery box I love it!  I know I need to do something with this bike since it goes through fuses like no ones business.  It blew fuses so bad the PO hooked up a breaker to the main fuse so he could reset it when it tripped.  I put in a 20 A and was ok.  But today after a test run in the parking lot it blew a fuse.  On the bright side the clutch seems to work.  That short ride felt great!

Really hoping to go for a real ride this weekend.  If anyone wants to help me exercise this electric gremlin.  It would be much appreciated.

Check the wiring to and from the ignition switch.

Ok will do.  Is it possible the wiring harness is at fault for the fuse pops?
