Hondamatic - How Many Made?
« on: May 05, 2012, 09:04:20 PM »
From several different sources I have estimated that Honda made totally some 17,000 CB750A Hondamatics between late 1975- 1978!
I am still very happy with my Hondamatic because its tranny ;-)

Mick Duckworth's book lists a total of 8100 for all three years and I have no idea if that number is correct but this seem to be the most oft-cited number.
I have seen the ~7400 number somewhere else, I can't remember the source at the moment.
I agree that ~8100 seems like a low number even for the unloved 750A but I have never seen a number as high as 17,000.  What sources are you referencing?

Not much to read.

The VIN numbers are straight sequential numbers.  The VIN numbers are not "coded" as they are in cars to denote options/colors.  Just a number.  The first number after the 7 does indicate the year is was made:

1976 Honda CB750A
- Frame: CB750A-7000001
- Engine: CB750AE-7000001
1977 Honda CB750A
- Frame: CB750A-7100001
- Engine: CB750AE-7100001
1978 Honda CB750A
- Frame: CB750A-7200001
- Engine: CB750AE-7200001

1978 CB750A (upgrading very, very slowly)

Past bikes - Honda: SL350, CX650C, CB900C, CB1000C, CM450A; Kawasaki: several 1972 750 H2's; Suzuki: TC90J.

Bikes I want: CX650ED, a mid-sized japanese V-twin with ABS.

From multiple on-line sources, I found that the last frame number:

in 1976 was 7331;
in 1977 was 10560; and
in 1978 - no information.

So, although not every frame made it into final production, we can safely say that about 17,500 or so were sold in 1976 and 1977.

All we need now is the last frame for 1978.  I doubt that we'll find it - but we can always post our frame number.

Who's got the largest 1978 frame number?

Well, as we all know if it's on the internets it must be true! ;)
(Not that I think Duckworth couldn't be wrong.)

Does the Honda 750A manual or parts guide list any production numbers?

My "internet sources" were actually some Honda part number lists.

Nothing in the Owner's Manual, and nothing in the Service Manual - although my Service Manual is dated December 1977, so it couldn't have any 1977 or 1978 data in it, even if such numbers were put in them.

Right, exactly. My CJ360T parts list has production numbers, that's why I asked if 750A might have them as well.

Well, either way I agree the higher number is more probable. There's just too many left out there today.

From my 78's VIN I can say there were a little better than 5K made that year.

We might get close if we offered up the vin on the bikes we know of. I will check on the number on my 77 tonight. I believe it is in the 5,000's. The highest in each of the three years would be an indicator.
1974 CB750 K4
1970 CT70

Well you win so far, my 78 is in the 2900's.

But - to put the sales numbers in perspective, in 1976, the number of "K" models sold was almost 36,000, and the number of "F" models was about 22,000.

So, the 22,000 or so (for all three years of the CB750A) doesn't compare well . . . .

My ´78 is 56** so the total is more than 17000 as I wrote earlier. Probably something less than 25000 CB750A:s!

Well, my '77 is 86**, so it must have been built later during the model year.

More info, might even be correct, but I doubt it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_CB750

"...1975 CB750K5 (US-only, K2/K4 elsewhere), CB750F, CB750A (Canada-only)[17] The 1975 CB750F had a more streamlined look, thanks in part to a 4-into-1 exhaust and cafe style seat with fiberglass rear. Other changes included the use of a rear disc brake and a lighter crankshaft and flywheel.
1976 CB750K6, CB750F1, CB750A
1977 CB750K7, CB750F2, CB750A1
1978 CB750K8 (US-only), CB750F3, CB750A2 ...."

Only 400K total made?

I don't understand the post.  I looked at the link, and didn't see any numbers for how many Hondamatic's were made.

Also, I have also read many internet pages saying that the Hondamatic was sold in Canada, but I've never found an "official" source.

Anybody know if the CB750A was marketed by Honda in Canada?  I'm sure that some made there was into Canada - but were they sold by Honda?  Also - it also seems odd that the CB750A was introduced into the Canado market before the US . . . .

.....didn't see any numbers for how many Hondamatic's were made.....

As I mentioned, it just gave the TOTAL of ALL SOHC 750s made.  I found that to be a somewhat relevent piece of info.

I would have to belive it could be true; the Mercury Bobcat was sold in Canada in 1974, one year before it was sold in the US.

The reason that I don't believe it is - I've haven't found any magazine reviews, or any other information from mother Honda that validates the info as fact.  Still on the search, though . . . .

Hi:
I saw this post about whether or not the CB750A was sold in Canada or not...I live in Ayr, Ontario about 1 hour Southwest of Toronto and I own 2 1977 750A's. I bought them both used. My serial numbers are 7107896 for the blue one and 7107787 for the red one. In Canada they have have UVIP package that you buy from the Ministry that shows who has owned the motorcycle in the past. It cost $20.00. I bought one for my Blue 1977 750A. It shows 9 previous owners...
Unfortunately it shows the first owner in June 15th, 1984. I don't know the reason for not showing any earlier owners. Perhaps the MTO wasn't computerized back then...
I think they were sold in Canada but can not confirm it.

I just got off the phone with the Honda dealership up here in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada and he told me that Canada did sell the Honda 750A. He thinks it was only for one year, two at the most but is leaning more to the one year sale. He thinks 1977.
Hope that answers the question.
