Oil capacity and a "heart attack" in Iceland
« on: May 04, 2012, 01:55:34 pm »
Hi there wisards of the Honda CB 750.
I had a rather disheartening experience a few days ago.
Forgot to turn my gas cock to off and after the bike went running a loud bang and oil flowed all over my garagae floor with a stinking smell of gasoline.
I discovered after getting my heart rythm back to normal that an overflow had occured and the petrol had gotten down through the carb's into the cellar cavity and it was full. A phenomenon known I am told caused by the needle in the carb not closing the valve and overflowing the carb and thus going down the cylinder walls.

When changing oil today I came across a perplexing thing.
In the "Shop Manual" it says under the Honda CB 750 specifications  that the oil capacity is supposed to be 3.5 litres and the oil tank capacity should be 2 litres.
On a page next to this one under spec's for the K3 series which mine is it says that oil capacity should be 3.5 litres but there is no mention of an oil tank or oil tank capacity.
How come?
Or is the capacity 3.5 litres and thereof 2 litres in the oil tank.
Why is it not mentioned in the spec's for the other K series, do you know.

With regards from Iceland

Johann

The oil capacity is the same.
If your crankcase was full of gas/oil you'll probably have to change the oil twice to get all the gasoline flushed out.

That was a wise suggestion, I'll do that.

Factory oil change procedure states (after draining tank & crankcase) to pour 3 qts into the oil tank, run motor 1-2 minutes, shut off, then add oil to top line of cap dipstick.
NOTE: Only check oil level right after motor has run because some day the oil pump check valve will let some (or all) of the tank oil drain into the crankcase after sitting. Topping off otherwise will cause overflow.

I really have no idea as to what caused the bang.
I can only guess that the pressure inside the cellar department caused it.
I have ridden the bike since and so far there is nothing to suggest that anything broke or became damaged in any way, but it has only been a few days since this happened so I really can't tell.
I just keep my fingers crossed and watch out for any signs.

If its not obvious, and it still runs, not much else to do.
