ATF + Acetone
« on: May 08, 2012, 09:41:33 AM »
A buddy of mine inherited a WWII era Walther Olympia pistol that was seized up due to surface rust on the mating surfaces of the slide to frame and the magazine release.  I figured if ATF and Acetone is good for a seized engine, it should work on a gun too.  Soaked the whole gun in a coffee can over night.  Worked like a charm, my buddy thinks I'm a genius now (didn't tell him I learned it on this forum) ;)

Here is an interesting info too:

Some of you might appreciate this. Machinist's Workshop magazine tested penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts.

They are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist, Bud Baker.

They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment.

Penetrating oil ..... Average load

None ...................... 516 pounds

WD-40 ................... 238 pounds

PB Blaster ............... 214 pounds

Liquid Wrench ......... 127 pounds

Kano Kroil .............. 106 pounds

ATF-Acetone mix.......53 pounds

The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price.

It floats around the 'net for a while.

interesting! now can you spray the mix on a rusted nut and bolt like you would with any other penetrating oil. my 1960 Bel air is having some issues that i need to attend and I'm wanting to try this.
I've done a lot of things in my life that I'm not proud of...and the things I AM proud of, "are disgusting"

You can use an aerosol sprayer, like this:
http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=aerosol+sprayer&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=15690818378914079142&sa=X&ei=UlypT7asAcmoiALIzMTTAg&ved=0CLYBEPMCMAA
This was just the first hit from a google search.  I'm sure there are other to be found.

The only worry might be the plastic container melting with the acetone.  But usually, if it is ok for non-latex paint, it is ok with acetone.

Any good brews like this for soaking Honda gasket bond off. Getting the original gasket surfaces clear is pretty tough
