I have a similar problem with my 75 400F also.
My tach stays smooth, but is slow in both climbing and returning to idle.
I lubed and inspected the cable but it didn't make a difference.

My 73 CB500K2 25K has the same exact problem.

I think it's a special Art that some people have developed to do this damper fluid re-fill and I'd like to have one of those "Artists" among the sohc4 community do my tach.
I'll just keep on reaching out and I'll find someone.  ;)

I've read seveal threads here about disassembling an instrument, even posted one myself,  but never about regreasing them. usually the purpose was to change out the face plate.

Regreasing has been left to the shops, or Lecram.

Thanks,
I need hands on tutoring w/ many things when it comes to the computer...;once I move I'm going to find a computer friendly person and go from there.I haven't met any helpful & inspirational folks here in the Lehigh Valley so far.

I called Foreign Speedo out in San Diego and they inspired me to give them my business, now if only they'd send me a step by step DVD so I can do this clock repair myself next time..... ;D. They quoted me the $85 price you mentioned Ron,and for that they'd service the entire Tach. and use the same trim ring..and leave it in excellent shape + calibrate it.  :) sounds good. I wonder if I should include any Tach. drive ratio for my model ? This pair of low mileage ,garage kept M/C 40 year old clocks were in excellent working condition before I stored them for 6 months...upside down. The faces are fresh w/ no fading..,well "Live & Learn" as my Mother used to say.A lesson well learned.

I think i mentioned i used them for my CB77 Speedo/Tach restore. This has both instruments in the same housing. It was original with the bike and I was very concerned that it could be saved. It had set dormant in a temp controlled store room for 25 years. Still the humidity changes etc had taken their tolls and it would not read correctly and was bouncy. It wasn't cheap, $245 IIRC, but it worked perfectly and i couldn't tell it had been opened. They wound up some more mileage on it so i could be guiltless when telling how many miles it had on it.

I hope they can do you right as well, let us know. My impression is they've seen it all and know what they are doing. They said they can recalibrate my speedo since i switched to a 18" wheel.  Did you talk to Preston?

Ron,
I spoke w/ the first man who answered the telephone on Fri.and he spoke to someone else about the damper fluid replacement & price. They said they would need to charge that price even if it's only to re-fill the fluid because they have to open it up;once they do open it up,they'll service the entire unit..that's their way. They told me 1-3 weeks turn around time..& if I'd like it done sooner to put a little note in the box to ask them to get it back to me sooner.
I have had tach's & speedo's apart before and I do a fairly neat job of re-crimping the trim rings.I would love to do this one myself..& if another member steps up here & informs me w/ a step by step procedural list of items like they started to on the older thread that I posted to yesterday & today..the one about " the correct Silicone Damper Fluid Viscosity for a Tach...." that is presently on the 1st page  ::).I know, I NEED Basic computer skills...No Doubt. That'll be happening sooner now when I move.I'll be off the grid for a bit because this computer is going into storage on Mon. when I head down to GA. I'll be working off the Library computer & others for a while until I come back up here w/ a 15' truck to get my stuff and haul it 1000 miles South.Big Job.
I hope someone posts to this thread this weekend, maybe wrenchmuch or AshimotoK0 because they've got into this tachometer damper fluid about a year or so ago and they have experience.  ;)

I've meant to include in my last two posts about Foreign Speedo, that i was referred there by someone in the VJMC (Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club). I was active with them (VJMC) when i was fooling around with my CB77. So they (Foreign Speedo) have a following in the old Jap MC crowd.

Ron,
I wonder how much they'd charge me for a tutorial DVD w/ an instruction sheet ?  :)
I'd like to incorporate that into some repair services that I'll do in the future..,I don't mind learning...& I'm willing to buy or make a few special tools to do that too;I know I'll come across a good number of them in the future. The older these bikes get,the more dried out that damper fluid will become.
I'm still hoping to hear back from wrenchmuch by PM  ???
