ok maybe it is just late, but I can't figure this out. The Lucas has a red wire and a black wire. I assume the black is ground. I have 3 wires going to the stock taillight. A ground, and I assume a run/brake light & the run only for breakdowns. When I attempt to put it together I either get a run only or a brake light only, not both together. Bulb looks fine, no prob there. Maybe its just late and I am tired! Oh yeah if its any consulation I have burned the tips is my fingers off as that freeking fuse is HOT. Please tell me that's not a prob.

If you've only got 2 wires, one is for tail, one for brake and the light is designed to ground thru its housing and the metal of the fender, frame etc.

Really bright usually means the brake light and tail light are reversed. But I'm no whiz.

I would add when you get it sorted, I would run a dedicated ground wire from somewhere on the lucas lamp to the green in your harness. Mimic the stock arrangement, don't trust a frame ground. can't say if that's your fuse problem or not.

MCRider has it right.
I have installed 2 of them and you need to run a ground wire from the metal of the tail light to the ground connection in the tail light wiring loom.
Red and black wires are tail (dim) and brake (bright) lights. Can't remember if brake is red or black.

I would trust a good clean frame ground The factory did but not a fender ground

There should be aground wire in the light where it mounts to the fender.  Mine had one and grounded fine there.  I still have the metal fender too.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Thankyou for all the input. Mine didn't come with a seperate ground,I did however run a seperate ground wire off of the the light to the stock loom. Combo that worked for me seperate black ground from back of light to stock ground, red wire to green with yellow stripe and black wire to brown stock wire. Thanks again fellas!

What was popping the fuses?

MC my best guess is grounding it to the fender? Here's a CRAPPY cell phone pic as I noticed a crack in the camera lens. Off to Sprint yet again,I hope the warranty covers it.

Yeah, I don't understand exactly why a bad ground would pop fuses, but i know a dedicated ground wire solves lots of problems.

I always liked the Lucas light on our bikes, looks good i think. Looks good on a bobbed fender too, as well as stock.

I plan on keeping my fenders stock. I like the look! I too like the Lucas as opposed to other tail lights. It reallly cleans things up. As far as the clubmans, I may get rid of those and put on super bike bars instead. The jury is still out on that one.

Hey guys, coming in a little late on this but did you solder the ground wire to the light somewhere or how and where exactly did you attach the ground wire on the light. ?

It's a Lucas Style tail light, just as the topic title says. ;D
Not that I bought one myself, but you can buy one here: http://www.discovolantemoto.co.uk/lighting/lucas-type-rear-light/prod_397.html

I'm thinking about swapping out my stock 500 taillight for a Lucas style or something else (round one with a license bracket); anyone know if there are options out there that are direct swaps and do not involve drilling additional mounting holes in the fender?

I want to re-use the existing mounting holes on my stock fender. There are a lot of vendors out there selling the same Lucas style, but I have not found any specs on the center span of the mounting holes on the taillights for sale.

Felix, thanks. I was thinking that since Lucas is a big company they would have more than one model tail light however I see now that it is a specific style...

If you'd use the stanard mounting holes, wouldn't the Lucas taillight face down?

I see everyone else was talking about grounds and stuff (skimmed it), but here's what I know, on the one I have on my bike it's the exact same as how you describe yours.  I have the stock chrome fender on the bike with the taillight bolted to it.  I have the black wire running to the running light and the red wire going to the brake light.  It works this way, hope this helps.
