Here we go folks, just discovered a pair of 76 400F's. This is to be my first full-on project.

One is complete but hasn't run in a while. The other is mostly there, but has sat for a number of years. Starting with a carb tear down, new tires and who knows from there. Feel free to tell me if I am doing things wrong or right, especially if I am making extra work for myself. Photos are coming......

If anyone has a 400F tank that will fit, please let me know. I am concerned mine may not be salvageable. More to follow on that issue.

Nice find.  I'll be interested in following your progress as I'm in the middle of restoring a 75 model.  You have nice starting points with both bikes.  Have fun!

Thanks Larry, we couldn't resist. I just had to see them go to a good home. We are planning on putting the good one on the road for my wife, and with the second I will get to start the cafe I have always wanted to build!

This is one of the best birthday presents ever! Oh wait, my 750K3 was my birthday present 3 years ago..... OK almost.

Dawdish, how much just to sell the tank, unfortunately I will need both of the headers.

Thanks to all for the encouragement to take this on, I will try not to dissappoint you with my lack of mechanical competence.

And a very special thanks to my wife for supporting my desire to see this through to completion.

I was thinking 125, no cap no petcock, plus shipping.

I'll tell ya mine is such a blast to ride I think I like it more than my 500...

I will check on the shipping rates and let you know. I assume there are no issues with pinholes, excess rust etc??

Thanks for posting

David Silver is doing new tanks.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Mine is more fun than my 550 was...You get pretty confident pretty quickly tossing it around corners!

Good luck with the rebuild, I'll be watching!

Thanks for the votes of support, I will definitely check out the new tanks at DSS. Any and all tips and advice are more that welcome.
My theory at the moment is that I can overcome any lack of technical knowledge with enthusiasm and a few pints.

Yesterday I pulled the carbs.....that was fun. Thanks to whoever posted the tip about using a ratchet strap to pull back the airbox to get it out of the way. Worked great! Found out there were mice living in the airbox and filter for the last little while. (See photo) I'm confident that a little bit of rebuilding will sort them right out.

See? Enthusiasm right there!!!(I've never rebuilt carbs, but SOHC Digger says I can do it so I will believe him)

Here is a couple of photos to show the teardown progress. First tank is in great shape considering how long it has been sitting. Started poking around the second tank for any weak spots and pinholes. I'm pretty sure I found one........

to be continued...........

I have had no rust issues, no leaks, rode with this tank for about a month before i started the build.

I would be better off attaching my petcock to a an empty antifreeze bottle and gun taping it to the frame...........

Checked out the new tanks from DSS, a little out of my budget range for this project, just waiting on my carb rebuild kits in the mail.

zachz,

Thanks for the tip on Western Hills Honda, great guys to deal with over the phone and I got a bunch of stuff that is harder to find north of the border. That and they ship to Eastern Canada for $15.00!!

Items ordered

Gaskets and O Rings for the carbs
Fork Seals and Rings
Air filter
Front brake diaphragm

Shipped for under $150.00

More updates as parts start showing up....

New question, can anyone recommend a certain tyre brand for the 400's. Looking for a commuter type of tire just for cruising around town that will last a few years and not break the bank. Please don't say Duro, had them on my '73 350F and they were horrible tyres.
