CD, this one is a keeper, was a keeper to begin with. Besides, some way some how I don't know how all the pennies add up close to big fat $3, and to sell it, I don't know. Funny to say, but all I know is that she feels right in between my legs :)

As it is, she's not all mine yet. Once I got the title, she will look like how I want her to be.

So, second episode of the trilogy is coming......

to be continued.......

Goldarrow,
Very happy to hear that you conquered those issues and all is well and operational. I'm looking forward to the second episode. Congratulations on a job well done.

Mine has a little tick to it also until it heats up.  I assume its in need of a valve adjustment.

If the top end ticking sound is normal. I'll just learn to love it.

Carb sync tool in on the shopping list.

Just got new plate, reg, and insurance. Put about 5 miles on it, play with idle screw at every stop :P

Timing at idle is ok on F mark, but when rev to 2500rpm or even higher, timing doesn't line up with advance mark.  Hmm....

youve done well,be sure your advancer moves and moves all the way,set your timing by bringing up the rpm untill it stops advancing, set your timing here between the marks or more toward the righthand mark of the pair,,where it ends up when idling so be it,,youll have a better runner this way.

Don't play the adjust the idle at every stop game. Set when motor is fully warmed up.
If not steady, check your intake for air leaks.
Put easy some miles on it...

Kind of sounds like a timing chain clacking to me. Check your timing chain adjuster and get it in sync.

Agreed on setting the idle when its' fully warmed. It should come back to that idle point fairly consistently each time it warms up... if it doesn't then you've got air leaks or jetting issues.

Can't seems to find the time to put some miles on her, not good, but 20 miles on it so far.

Top end ticking noise doesn't seem to want to go away even after adjusted to chain tensioner and tappets. Is this fairy common to old bikes?

Riding report - very nice and smooth through all the gears, and throttle range, no carb sync yet. Idles seem better than previously noted.  Sometimes as approaching stop lights, bike just shuts off but started right up.

Here's a shot of the bike I took today. Stopping by local shop that I "try" to be friend with. Nice guy but doesn't look like its gonna happen though. I suck at making friends with strangers, lol.

This photo marks the Second phase of this build. First order of business, I want to make use of Lester shoes, then clip-on bars, mini speedo gauge, smaller round tail light, and finally tank color on spare tank I got from seanbarney. We'll see how quick or long I can get this going.

And lastly, here are my young riders :)

My 550 likes to tick at idle, I just keep the hammer down! Are ya thinking about paint? Noticed the tank and L side cover don't match.

The side covers are grey textured metallic. The tank will match the color. We'll see how that goes. If don't work out, I'll just paint the pieces all over again.

Stock tank and covers are still good as the day the bike came to my house.

Took the Lester wheels off the other 550 bikes. Confirmed the magic numbers 20100 Lester

We all know how dirty and greasy these wheels can be after neglected for so many years

Spent all day cleaning and changing out the bearings. Not much trouble there. The wheels are not polished and did not get new paint. They do have that nice age patina from tiny pit spots. Overall clean and gotta love that vintage look

The real trouble was fitting the chain on the rear wheel!  So many hours fighting it, but turned out that my chain is 2 links shorter. I'm puzzled as sprockets are of the same sizes stock 17F/37R. De-rust chain that came with lester and will finish them off tomorrow.

Taking things apart, including carbs.

Mocking up the clip on bars. Removed switch controls from the stock bars. While doing it, I was thinking this whole thing I'm doing don't make much sense! I'm taking things that are already working off the bike, spending time and money on something totally unnecessary.  I like the cafe look, but I re read through my post, asking myself if this is what the bike wants to look....? I may end up putting everything back and keep It the way it is and abandon the mod. That should make my wallet happy also.

Well, as far as the carbs goes. I took them off because of leaking float bowl o-rings and float heights on 1 and 4. Also, I was tinkering with points and timing. My timing on 1-4 still won't get to full advance with strobe light. On 2-3, see timing at idle, but no strobe lights when rev the throttle? Urghh.....

As far as the mods, it really depends on what you intend to do with the bike. If your plans are to sell it, then it doesn't make sense to spend more money, chances are it won't increase value and may narrow your buyers field (most buyers will buy a mostly original bike, some buyers won't buy a modded bike).
So you may need to make that decision. One thing that will attract buyers: get it running good.

Decided to put everything back. This is it for her.  I want a cafe look bike, but I will look for a cheap rolling basket case in the future.

Took me half a day to put everything back. But 3 days to figure out why it wouldn't start up. Turned out that I had the advancer lobe off 180 degrees!  I'm learning :)
