Help me get a grip - my throttle grip is acting silly!
« on: May 07, 2012, 03:32:08 PM »
My grip has worked it's way off of the throttle body and I'm clueless how to get it to move back up. Seems like the glue got enough to let it slide, now it won't budge, Any suggestions?  bluezboy

Use a heatgun/hairdryer to take it off. Glue it on again.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

You don't need glue.  You sure it had some before?  If it was truly glued by a clueless PO, then the following won't work unless you clean off all the glue first.

Squirt some water into the crack between rubber and throttle tube.  You can easily pull the inner rim of the grip away from the tube.  Use a little dish soap in the water, if you have two.

Rubber is elastic, so use that property to "massage" and extrude/stretch the grip back into full extension.  You can squeegee out excess water, by workng it toward the inner end and dab the excess with a paper towel.

Let it dry til tomorrow, or use a heat gun to evaporate the water.

Ride on.

If you take a rubber tube and compress it end to end, the diameter gets larger.  Conversely, stretching it deduces the I.D.
You can use these principles to both loosen and increase the grip the rubber has on the hard tube.

Maybe a clueless PO glued it because it kept turning. I'm sure many owners don't just do things for nothing.

Sounds like you need a new set of grips, this happens as they age, same just happened to mine.
Hair spray is a great product to use when installing new grips.

I'm sure POs do many things because they don't know any better way, or believe in folklore.  I've seen hose clamps on some!  ::)  Is THAT something you'd want to perpetuate?

None of my Hondas ever had glued grips.  It wasn't the factory way back in the 70's, and they didn't slip.  Perhaps today they do on some modern bikes.  But, I don't know about that.

Only one I ever had that slipped was one that the PO used silicone or grease to install.  There's more than one way to do something wrong.  ;D

I have had a few that slipped and I'm sure a new one would have fixed that problem but why spend money when a simple application of adhesive does the job?

+1 on hairspray. The cheapest stuff is the best. Before you install a new grip make sure you clean  under the plastic tube to remove the dried greae and crap. Clean any glue off the plastic. Put a good coat of hairspray on the plastic tube and push the grip on. Hairspray is very slippery at first then it will harden and hold the rubber in place.

The original grips may not have been glued, but they were on there pretty good. The new gel grips may have a release agent on them.

Did you try to clean and stretch the one you had?  Stretching the grip makes the ID smaller, and the rubber really doesn't want to slide if clean and at all resilient.

But... New grips can be had in the $5-$10 range.
What does glue cost?   Isn't that about the same price?

And, if it is super glue, it has a 6 month shelf life.

Of course, gluing them on does mean cutting them off and destroying to replace them, should you prefer a different style.

Do what you want, though.

I have good luck with a air gun with football needle to blow them off. Then clean with hot soapy water and hair dryer. Never glued any on.

The grips tend to harden over time and you get the vibration in your hands and a lack of skin traction on the hardened material, so you grip harder. New grips are are softer, transmit less vibration and nature of the material allows a lighter touch and less fatigue. As you get older it helps a
 great deal.

Yeah they do. You need the cheapest kind you can find, sticky nasty big hair spray.

+3 on the hairspray.  Use compressed air (air compressor with a needle tip works best) to get it off - insert the needle under the grip and release air, which creates a pocket of air under the grip as it tries to escape, making the grip slide right off.  Apply a little hairspray to the bare throttle tube and put the grip back on - the wet hairspray acts as a lubricant for getting it on, and as it dries it tacks the grip in place.  I've never had a problem with this method, and it isn't permanent if you do eventually want to remove the grip.

Should not have happened if only a year old.  Something's wrong.  Start new, get a nice pair of gel grips...

If grips were never glued why does Honda sell "Honda Handgrip Cement" (available from David Silver Spares)?  It's good stuff...

Selling it to the general public doesn't mean they used it in 70's production.

" - Required when installing PVC-type handgrips."

Are you using PVC grips?

I remmember when stores sold "Pet Rocks".  And people bought them!   ;D ;D
I REALLY should have mined my property back then...

Then there are people that buy bottled water at $8 per gallon.  Must be a reason, right?
(FYI: Most municipal water costs less than 1 cent per gallon.)

Man, I'd take that sort of mark up anytime.  (But, I'd have trouble sleeping due to issues of conscience.)

I don't have any hairspray.  As a matter of fact, I don't have any shampoo either.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.
