Author Topic: starter button broken...where to buy replacement??? (Read 9854 times)

hey guys,
anyone who has kept up with any of my posts knows about the ejectiong sparkplug problem i had, well that is fixed, the engine is in the bike (looking smmoth and sleek with its new black paint) but when i went to start it today the starter button kept sticking, so i pulled the controls off the bars and the back part of the (plastic) switch had broken off so that the return spring had nothing to push against. so basically, i need a new assembly for this, just the little inside swtich/button housing part, so that i have an electric start...where can i get a new one without breaking the bank (or going to radio shack for some cheapo switch)?

ps-the bike ALMOST started (ran for about five seconds) but i was too tired from kickstarting to go on.

Honda never listed any internal switch parts, just the entire switches, housing, and wire assembly. So you basically can not get the parts. The assembly should still be available and the later (current) version has a much better starter switch that the original.
Getting a switch from RS or somewhere else (Newark, Allied, etc.) is the only "inexpensive" option. There's no DPST switch I've found that will fit, so you bypass the lighting cutout and just have a SPST starter button. Works great, looks OK.

I am not eaxctly sure what broke. If it is the small plactic button? They are fairly generic. I bought one from a Kawasaki dealer.

If it is just the button like BobbyR said I got the button and spring from Honda dealer less than 10.00. Dannie

I bought my push activated switch from Home Depot when I moved my starter button.
Cost under $10..

CB750 buttons & springs are shown in the parts book. Got mine from Servic Honda.

i fixed the momentary switch for my horn with a piece of galvanized sheet metal. there was a brass spring plate in there that was grounded and made contact with the hot lead for the horn, it snapped in half, so i just fashioned a new one out of sheet metal and it works fine. the buttons themselves are generic, i've got one from an old suzuki cci 90 j in my honda, just had to file a few flats in the large diameter to get it to fit into pocket.

the button/spring assembly is fine, it is the housing inside of the handle that broke (the part the the spring pushes against to push the button back out). i got a starter button from a fiend of mine that is used on skip barber race cars, im planning on wiring it up near the left hand side cover.
after looking at the bike setup, i know i can get the starter to turn by touching the yellow/red wire to the starter lead on the terminal (not sure of actual names of these parts). is it as simple as hooking a wire from there to a button, then the other side to the yellow/red wire? do i have to leave the yellow/red connected where the joint is that brings it to the handlebars or can i just unhook it? i have looked at wiring diagrams and am still clueless...

Someone found a replacement at radio shack. I used to even have the part #. Maybe a search of the old dijorie (whatever) files.

my starter button has been broken since the day i got the bike, and ive really gotten use to kick starting mine, wouldnt have it any other way. Nothing better than starting an old school bike the old fashioned way.....

i wired up a race car starter button that my fiend had lying around. works perfect, mounted it to the top of the left side cover. got the bike running today and took her for a spin, im very happy to be back on the road after my first major project with the bike.

another quastion though, headlight now does not work....i know that on the 76' the starter button killed the headlight...how do i wire around this?

Find where teh wires from the bar control get interconnected (headlight bucket?)
Find the Blk/Red wire and connect it to the Black wires.
Make sure the Blk/ red inside the bar control doesn't touch surrounding metal.

Me. I bought a pushbutton switch at Radio Shack (don't know the PN--I think there were two switches in the package) that was small enough to fit into the cavity when the Honda parts were removed. There was a larger cap on the button part that popped off. I might have had to enlarge the hole in the housing a bit--I don't remember. Hardest part was soldering the short leads to the switch.

perfect solution....but if the black/red DOES touch surrounding metal, will i blow a fuse when i am in the middle of nowhere (as i did today) with no tools (my own stupid fault) and (luckey for me) an un-soldered starter button on the sidecover (hello jumper wire...)

sorry i will be more direct. If the red/black wire touches something and grounds, will that cause a surge of some kind...because i blew a fuse today and lost all of my idiot lights/ignition and had to make a jumper wire to get home....and that red/black wire is probably not wrapped up well enough, or the contact fromt he original starter switch is bouncing around inside the handlebars...

The Blk/Red will be unpowered until jumped to the Black. Until it is connected to black it will not blow fuses even if grounded. However, there is a black wire to that starter switch, too. Ground that and the main will blow.

Were it me and I relocated the starter button, I'd simply disconnect the Blk/Red and one of the blacks going to the control pods. One black was for the headlight/starter, the other is for the Stop-Run-Stop switch for ignition coil power. Pick wisely.

Main fuses can go for myriad reasons. Most popular is fuse clip corrosion.

thanks for directing me to "WTF Fusebox..." i was having much trouble figuring out why the black/white wire (power to coils) was getting so damn hot. after reading the thread i decided to trace it and found it all frayed up. replaced the wire with a peice form an old taillight assembly, soldered it up and rode it trouble free (only for a few blocks, will get a real test tommorrow). i guess i could have frayed the wire or pinched it while taking off/putting on my fuel tank? anyway, the fuse is not blowing, the wire is cool as a cucumber as is the fuse box. thanks for your help.

Hi, I'm running into the same problem. I'm rebuilding a 76cb550k that has the button spring missing.
Dealer said they don't carry it so I bought one from RS Electronics, shown in the photo.
My question is do I buy the closed circuit model or the open circuit model. And secondly, is this a close size for the hole (I figured I'd have to widen it a little with my dremel.

Does anyone have the part number? My usually diligent Honda parts man could only find the entire right control assembly, made out of unobtanium.

Unless you want the starter to RUN ALL THE TIME EXCEPT WHEN YOU PRESS THE BUTTON

I'd go for the "open circuit model"

Another question is whether you have enough room in the housing for the switch to fit

It might be too large. $:-\$

I am not familiar with the CB550, but my 76 CB750 has three terminals for the starter switch. This is to allow the starter button to turn off the headlight while the starter is engaged (while you have the button pressed)

Hell maybe someday I'll go get one for the 360. It went bad 3yrs ago so I just disconnected the leads and have been kickin it. Was funny this summer as the boy and me would goof on each other if the other ones bike wouldnt start on first kick. His is a little 80 xr 80.

i finally got sick of kicking and bought a momentary switch from radio shack. i mounted it on the left side panel and think of it as a theft deterant device.

That is the same as my starter switch (76 CB750K)
Originally the black/red stripe wire went to the 7amp headlight fuse and then to the headlight
The black wire should be the 12V power wire
The yellow/red wire goes to the starter solenoid.
The green/red wire on the other terminal of the solenoid goes to the Clutch and Neutral switches.

If the black/red wire is not connected and the headlight works ok, then someone (usually the elusive PO) changed the wiring before you got the bike.

Newbie: Looks like you have the part numbers. They are about $3 each. Be sure you get the spring. I didn't. Didn't realize the old one was gone until I had it apart. Had to shorten a horn button spring. Not worth the hassle. You will have to take the throttle cables off the carbs and remove the throttle grip. Took about an hour and a half to do the whole thing. Not hard, just tedious.
