cb125 voltage conversion issue
« on: May 08, 2012, 02:49:50 PM »
Hello all.

I purchased some components for my 78 125 to convert to 12 volt. I battery eliminator along with a rectifier/regulator from here oregonmotorcycleparts.com/VRRPM.html

I also purchased a universal 12 volt coil and a 12v condenser. Im not sure what to do with the new coil and condenser. The 6 volt coil had 2 leads and the spark plug outlet. The new one only has 1 lead and spark plug outlet. also the new condenser has 1 wire as opposed to 2 on the 6 volt.

The wires that need to be hooked up are the black/white from "run" switch, the contact wire, and the hot lead from battery.  It makes sense with 2 connectors on the 6 volt but not with the 1 connector on the 12 volt.

Welcome to the forum Chris !
I used to live in Vineyard Haven..,if this was the 90's you could have brought that bike to me and I would have had to figure out what to do about that 2 down to 1 change from 6-12 vt. coil conversion;that's a first for me. Is there still a M/C shop(mainly Harley's)there named Offshore Cycles whose owner is Mike ? I wonder what would happen if you brought that question to him ?

                                                      Again Welcome  :),

Hi Bill,

Yeah Panhead Mike is still there. I saw him today and spoke with him. Did you live on the Vineyard for a long time?

After i spoke with him i got back to my garage i was fumbled again. I showed him the new coil with only 1 lead on it. He said the coil is fine as with the condenser.

Basically i have the wire coming from the run switch which is not hot correct? Then i have a wire from the contacts with the condenser looped in. the case of the condenser is grounded to the frame. now,, does the run switch wire go to the hot lead of the coil or does the contact wire with the condenser loop go to the coil?

Yes Chris,
I lived on the Vineyard most of my life after I turned 16 up until 2000'.I knew Panhead..,he loves Harley's and hates "jap bikes" from what I remember.. ::). I was located in Vineyard Haven off of Greenwood Ave Ext. for 5 years(right across from the Cerebral Palsy camp)and the other 5 years I had my repair shop on W.William St. right down the street from the Tisbury School.I had a great deal on rent when the owner from WA. was my landlord..,but in 2000' he sold the property and the new owners hired "Trader Fred" as the landlord's representative.....,that's when I couldn't afford the "new" rental price and had to leave the island.I was a very small repair shop, but I loved it & I miss it. The name of my business was Habekost's Motorcycle Repair. I'm moving to GA. and would like to save some start up $ to begin a small shop again..,who knows?

Chris,
I think you should look for a copy of the newest wiring diagram for the CB125..;look on the battery application chart for Honda CB125's & see if you can identify the first year they show it to have the 12 volt battery. Then take that year/model bike's wiring diagram to confirm what the correct wiring for the coil will be.I believe that model also has CDi ignition which might be a good option for your 125...
If that was my bike I would just get the whole wiring harness from that newer model along w/ the CDi ignition & retrofit it to your bike.
Ebay might have some less expensive parts for sale, but they need to be compatible.
