Hi there from Uk
« on: June 08, 2006, 10:03:36 AM »
Hi  -  Thought I'd say hello and compliment everyone on what a diverse, interesting and knowledgeable bunch they are. The work put in by the guys who run the site is admirable and much appreciated by everyone I'm sure.
I have two SOHC wrecks at the moment - both 550s, a 75 K and a 77F. The F is a runner, complete and in reasonable roadgoing condition and I recently bought the K for spares but now feel loath to cannibalise her. The engine has a sticky valve it think and a few parts missing (expensive ones like the exhaust and mudguards) but I would like to keep her running if possible.
I have tinkered with bikes and cars all my life (mainly due to necessity!) and have enjoyed riding an old AJS competition machine I had for a number of years and a old BMW more recently.
I picked up the Hondas 'by accident' - too cheap to refuse, etc. (Less than 300 pounds in total for the two). I don't think prices will stay this low for too much longer unfortunately and 'Brit bike syndrome' will start to kick in. Inevitable I guess.
I have a soft spot for Hondas as my first bike was a CB125 when I was at art school and I used to ride all over the place on it - down to Cornwall from London (about 250 miles I think) and weekly 120 mile trips home. It never went wrong although I would have to let it cool down sometimes when it nipped up on a hot day.
I'll stop waffling on now except to say that I look forward to using the resources on the site and wish everyone safe and happy riding.
regards  Chris

Welcome Chris.

Do you have a bike to nip round to our side of town?
We meet mostly at Box Hill or Ace Cafe but could be a bit of a drag for you.

Thanks Steve
The bike is not MOTed at the moment but I will hopefully get it legal again soon. It is a bit of a trek round to the Ace - I am near Canterbury in Kent but I would like to meet up there sometime. Will keep you posted on the bike situation.

Hi Guys
Thanks to you all for the welcome and hope to have the chance to meet sometime. GeoffT in Orkney - I've spent some lovely times there visiting some friends in Brodgar (Taits) - some nice summers and one magical Christmas  (whisky in pint glasses, dancing and music in peoples' houses and fabulous views across frozen lakes to Hoy). Wonderful people and a wonderful place. Is that the lovely little Chapel built by Italian prisoners of war behind your bike on your avatar?

Well spotted Chris. It is indeed the Italian Chapel. There are a few Taits up here right enough and Brodgar is a very nice spot as well. I often fish Harray Loch on the Brodgar side up by Ned Spence's. His old place is now flattened and about to become a car park for the Brodgar Standing Stones.
Did you ever come up here on the bike? We get quite a few here every year. Some even around Easter for the Mad Dog Biker Rally. - Nutters that camp in a field in March in Orkney. I love this place but I know where I'd rather not be in a force 9 gail!!

I haven't taken a bike to Orkney but I imagine that it must be great riding around those roads. We stayed with Ingrid Tait and Duncan McLean (now married) in Stromness. Ingrid is a friend from college. They moved out to Brodgar when they had a baby. Can't imagine camping there in March - would think you might get blown out to sea if the winds really get going! It's a beautiful and striking place alright and we hope to visit again to catch up with everyone - when we do we'll let you know.

Hey GeoffT, if we pass you in the Orkneys won't we find ourselves up to our neck in sea water? Hi from a landlocked Coventry.

Only if you've got a very long neck. Do what most other people do - Take a ferry.
