The flange goes toward the transmission or the engine. I just changed mine.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?

@Lucky
That's what I figured with number stamp, but I believe the jt sprocket I have should be flange in with the number stamp in as well. Hopefully this will solve my issue, with the flat side in on mine the sprocket is sitting to close to the engine. The wear on the sprocket and engine case is proof enough of that and was the only out I place looking thing I discovered.

Thanks Ken & BobbyR for the confirmation, I'll post pics for you to see once I get them in photobucket.

Here's a couple pics of it all.

counter shaft and more chain wear on the case, I wiped off a bunch of aluminum shavings in the chain lube on the motor as well.

raised side, JT15 tooth

flat side which was facing the inside, not the shiny wear from the chain.

this is the old worn out 630 sprocket I replaced last june, no clue what brand it is. It had the big washer on the outside with another washer, lock washer and bolt.

Will put the sprocket back on facing the proper way and install a new chain and see what happens, hopefully it will be solved. I have a 3-4 day trip in july I'd like to go on seeing as my long weekend ride is toast this weekend...
