where do u get seat fabric.....
« on: May 08, 2012, 10:06:07 PM »
so im at the point where i want to re upholster my seat!!

now my biggest question is where do you source the fabric?

im sure you have to use like some kind of pleather so it can withstand the rain.

i want to do a hot rod red seat with a diamond stitch print on it.

im thinking that i will shave down the seat foam

then take 1 sheet of thick plastic then a really thin layer of foam and then put my hot rod red  pleather material over it and sandwich it so i can take my sewing machine and stitch with white thread a diamond print on it. the reason im doing the really thin layer of foam and making a sandwich is that so the diamond print will pop up.

then take all that and stretch it over my old seat pan and shaved down seat foam and then attach it.

anyone ever do this? and where do u get the pleather. can u go to micheals or something and do they have it? or will i have to order it online or go to some custom car upholstery shop?

Hancock Fabric or any fabric store sells upholstery supplies, including heavy vinyl upholstery material, heavy duty threads, and seat foam.  At least the ones around here do.

I rebuilt a stock seat pan with new foam last year, I covered it in black PVC I got at fabricland. I'd look around town for a fabric/sewing supply, they should have lots of colors or styles to choose from.

Got a boater's supply in your vicinity?
You are shopping for marine vinyl.  It has UV protection built in.  Put ordinary vinyl in sunlight and it will harden and crack in two years.
Found that out when I re-vinyl-ed my 71 mustang dash.  Disappointing. :(
