What's the latest on the C95?

You were cleaning the frame and had some parts off to the platers...
How did the rims turn out?
Did you replace or replate the spokes?

Cliff, I swear I'm not waiting for you to get a bike then going out and finding a customer with one like it but sure enough I'm doing a restoration on a 1964 CA95. 

I haven't had a chance to read thru your entire thread yet but I certainly will.

Cliff, the Michelins I ran on the C70 were the Gazelles, a good tire for the small bikes if you can get them for the CM90 you picked up.

I haven't done that much with the C95. I'm off to a friend's for a lesson in bodywork, the rear fender and the front fenders have been bashed and bent. The motor is together, I've been doing a bunch of polishing, the rest of the red bits, except the sidecovers, are ready for paint, some new wheel bearings, got an estimate on rechroming the rims ($150 each or so) and putting a wish list together for a parts order. I need handlebars, spokes, mufflers, header pipes (maybe), wiring harness, seat cover, headlight, sprockets, chain, signal light lenses - just a few things.  ;D ;D
Again, I get caught up in the PO's story and bring back what should have been a parts bike. I'm just the second owner of this bike. It has a good history.

Very nice looking lump with nice shiney highlights.  Having brought a few bikes and cars back from the edge I know what you mean by the list...  The ceramic exhaust coatings have come a long way with some bright silver available...if you would want to go that route.

Did the rust acid damage clean up or will you be patching any spots?
Fenders can be a pain to get right.

The sandcast looks great on the stand. Did it make it to the display location in the house?

Did you post any pics on you Goldwing?

Spring is here, nicer weather on the way...

Got it with a 750 swing arm pivot bolt. It pays to have tubs of spares laying around. Cliff.

Cliff saving my butt again, this bike had NO rear axle when I picked it up.

Cliff, that C95 motor is almost liquid looking, you really did some nice work cleaning and painting that one. A calendar of honda motor on benches or stands would be cool. Or a screensaver.

That is a huge Wing and very pretty. Not gaudy with chrome like many are and have been.  Must be a fun bike that you and your wife can enjoy.

About the k0 side covers...the epoxy putties are very strong and if they have a good bond with the surface they will not separate. A little tooth for them to key into is best.

Look forward to you restoration photos and the journey ahead...have fun!

Thanks David! Yes, the Wing IS huge. It seems to shed weight once it's underway and can be made to handle quite well for a 900 pound bemouth. It is a lot of fun and my wife's comfort was the final decision between it and an Ultra Glide. Besides, chaps make my ass look fat.
I'll have to start working out again though if I'm going to be any riding this summer.
I'll pick up some putty this afternoon. I think if I very carefully Dremel out the cracks a bit it will give the putty more of a surface to grip. Thanks for the tip. Cliff.

Cliff, drill a hole through the cover at the end of the crack, it relives the stress on that to prevent it from spreading further.

Hey Magpie, I also have a GL1800 that I've owned since new in 2003.  Best bike I've ever had!  (...and I notice you also have the Tulsa deflectors - I also have their bellypan.  Bad back?  Watch how much weight you load on that topcase carrier. :o)

You mentioned extra lights for it.  About 8 seasons ago I fabricated some driving/fog lights up for mine using some Halogen units that I mounted in the lower spots on the fairing that Honda reserved for that purpose.  I got them at a really good price at Walmart along with a lighted toggle switch that they sold, which also mounted in the correct spot as if it was made for that location.  Buried the wiring and a relay to power them.  Here are some old pictures if you are interested, along with a write-up I used as a guide. 

BTW the driving lamps use standard Halogen bulbs that I was able to boost to 100W. ;)  They come on even with high beams, so now when I pull in front of a semi rig on a dark road and throw them all on it's like lighting a flamethrower to lead the way...

Yes, we're really enjoying the Wing. I have the yellow Electrical Connection driving lamps in the cowl which are good for being seen. Belly pan too. The V-Stream windshield made it much more comfortable for my wife. The back rest keeps from slouching.
For the trunk rack I've reinforced the lid using the wide feet on the rack mounts, a strip of stainless steel between the feet and the lid to spread the load, a hard piece of foam between the lid and the inner lid, a piece of fuel line tubing in the gasket between the lid and the bottom and the soft part of the velcro on the lip of the trunk where the lid and bottom meet. It seems to be okay. We put all out wet weather gear in the rack back so it's not that heavy.
The GL1800 is an amazing motorcycle! Cliff.

Back to an earlier post about polishing.  I found that the Blue Magic clouded the finish after I was done with the final polish compound.  I am going to try a different polish for the last step.  I sand with 220, 400, 600, and 800.  I use an emery compound, then the tripoli, and than a white compound for the finsih.  I stop at 800 cause I can get all the free sandpaer I want but only up to 800. ;D  Going higher may negate the use of the emery.  It's less sanding and more polishing.......or more sanding and less polishing.  I also find in some parts there seems to be a natural cloudiness or variation in the alloy that will not polish or sand out.  Maybe just something in the casting process.

I never thought of that! The cloudiness was there on several pieces including on my 750F covers and I was thinking I was doing something wrong. Thanks for that, made my day!

Try some MAAS metal polish after you have final buffed to the luster you want.  It is around $USD 5 for a 2 ounce tube and it only takes a little bit as it is concentrated. It is easy to apply.  Apply to a soft dry cloth and wipe on and wipe off, no drying allowed. Buff with a soft clean cloth or buff to a shine. 
It provides a waterproof anti-tarnish corrosion inhibitor to protect the part. Generally only couple times a year to touch up after that...

It works great.

I found a silver & turquoise ring that I thought had some copper plating on it was so tarnished and in less than 5 minutes it was bright shiny silver again.

Hi! I got a little parts bike that is more complete and in better condition than the bike I'm working on so 2 will become 1 good one I think. I can even get the title for it! I thought it was a good deal for $200. And yes, wheels and a motor came with it however I will need a new set of cylinders if I want to rebuild the motor. I have a good motor on the bench waiting for the bike. Back to work! Cliff.

Rounded up another set of cylinders for $45 including shipping. They appear to be standard sized bores and were rusty as hell. An overnight soak in Evapo-Rust and a scrub in the laundry tub cleaned them up nicely. Cliff.

That's a good find for $200 Cliff!  Wow, interesting work...  Looks like the liners are joined. They are separate right?  I have a set of liners for the CA95 that I picked up in case...
My CA95 is still waiting for love...a parts bike like yours would shame it unmercifully.

Got the motor torn down and started the cleaning process. Rounded up another piston, rings, and exhaust valve. Cylinders in for honing. Pretty dirty inside but no broken bits in the bottom of the motor thankfully. I guess all the ring parts went out the exhaust.

Your CVMG is a great group for the parts you've found.

My right muffler on my 150 is totally dechromed and rusty, weird to see it that way...
