Magpie's 1964/1965 Benly 150 Twin Project
« on: May 09, 2012, 07:17:38 AM »
Another free bike but I had to go to Kelowna to get it. With the huge help of Frank/754 it was collected from the daughter of the original owner who brought it into the country. It was made in November/1964 in the Hamamatsu factory. We were negotiating on it and she finally said she was moving to Australia so if I wanted it I better come and get it. It had a 1967 Alberta licence plate on it.
Time to get moving on this one as I'm in a need money mode to finish the K0 and waiting to hear if the 750F qualifies for Collector plates and cheap insurance. So disaasemble and clean are cheap  fun activities.
Needs a set of handlebars and cables to see if it will run. The carb has a missing choke plate so starting it may be a challenge. More parts hunting -what fun!
First pics to last night. Boy is it ever tiny. I'm 6'3" and 210 pounds. I'll look like I'm riding a mini bike!
Cliff.

Your idea of fun is different than mine.   ;D  But it does look like a fun project.  Nice if the engine has to come out it will be a little lighter than the 750.  Good luck.

Looks fairly solid and complete.  Good luck with it.  Did it have the paperwork considering the original owner is -I assume- dead?

I'm learning how to polish, amazing what a polishing wheel and Autosol will do in a fairly short time. The chrome came back ok with Turtle Wax Chrome Cleaner and Polish. Left shock bad, right shock nicer now. They both looked the same before the polishing.Once I see if it runs then the engine should be an easy removal. Cliff.

Prospect, no paperwork but had some emails from the daughter saying it was a gift which helped a bit. Eventually, beause it was never registered in B.C. and Alberta had no records going back to 1967 it came down to claiming I paid $100 for it and it was transferred to my name once I paid the transfer tax. Got the petcock off the tank, had to drill the head off one screw. Had to be real careful with it because these petcocks are extremely hard to replace apparentely. i have another tank that a friend gave me with 3 broken off screws in it which is the topic of another thread. Quite a complex petcock for such an early Honda. Looks like it should continue to work but I will run an inlne gas filter. Cliff.

Cliff, would I be right in thinking you already have a C95 ?
This one looks to be from the Asian market.
All C95s in the west have finned cam covers with 4 screw fixing.
The tail light assembly on this one is also different.

Sam, the lady I got it from said her dad brought into Canada from Japan way back when. Engine number starts with C95E so you're right I think Sam.
Grgamna2, not yet, just got ignition keys made, battery coming on Monday or Tuesday. I'll change the oil just be sure it's ok. It's a Honda, it should start.  :D
Cheers,
Cliff.

Hey Cliff, I guess I'm late to the party!  Glad to see you're starting a thread here.  Did you get the pics of the bars I've got for you?  Those petcocks are a PITA...I gave up on mine (I now have two complete pieces and extra parts if you need) and bought an adapter which lets me use a modern, cheap petcock.  Which cables do you need?  I had trouble finding the right cables to match what was on my bike, so I've got extras of those too.

Does your VIN start with CA95-5, or 4?  While that mileage may be low, I've read on a specific forum for these bikes that lots of people stopped riding them right about then...that's when the motors would need a rebuild if they were ridden hard.  Hopefully yours was treated nicely like mine, and will give you many more miles.

Hi Greggo! I did get the pics and yes, they do look gnarly but are better than anything else I can find. I have the petcock operating but don't know if it will work properly. I have to remove all the rust in the tank first - molasses works well but very slowly. I'll need all the cables as these are quite stiff and the outer covering is broken in many spots. The engine number is C95-3010809. I have lunch on Saturdays with a bunch of old boys and one was a Honda mechanic. His first comment was"how's the bottom end, they didn't last long" so we'll see and hear what happens when I push the start button. This bike was not treated nicely. The kids of the po learned how to ride on it and then used it as a trail bike I think. If it starts banging loudly then a new chapter opens. I promised the woman that gave it to that if she sold it to me I would make it nice again. Well, she gave it to me so now I'm really on the hook.
I'm missing the chain guard, primary sprocket cover and tail light.  The fenders are bent pretty badly, the seat is shot and headlight broken. There seems to be a few parts bikes around so these parts will turn up eventually. I'm amazed how small this bike is especially parked beside my Goldwing!
Cheers, Cliff.

Gregg, measureing is a good idea as there are 3 different sets of bars not counting the flat bar C92.
The motors that Cliff has are completley different from your CA95.
They have different crank and cases, gearbox, pistons, cam and carb.
The Canadian, European and Asian bikes are C95 not CA95, the C motor is about 3bhp down on yours at the crank.

Thanks, I'll measure and take pics of the cables. And thanks Sam, that will help me from buying the wrong parts if I have to rebuild the engine. Cheers, Cliff.

Good call Sam.  I knew the American models were more powerful.  However, I didn't know they were so different.  Aside from the jet size differences, I'd like to know the difference between the CA95, and CB95's..

Cliff, I have at least two brand new cables that didn't fit my bike, so hopefully I can save you some trouble there.  The parts bike was only ~$200, so how about $10 for the bars?

Hi! Just checking the front brake cable and before I wreck something, is the bottom of the cable just supposed to slide out of the holder on the wheel? See pic below. i was going to hit it with some heat but it seems I have lent my small torch out to someone. grrrr.
Thanks,
Cliff.
