A/C ?
« on: May 09, 2012, 08:48:00 AM »
Can a horizontal window unit be installed vertically?   I would say no but hope I'm wrong.

sorry, but that's a big "no".

the coolant coils in an AC unit need to be kept upright, even when being stored (not in use).

Another concern would be the moisture condensation.  It drips out the bottom on a specific path.  Turn it on it's side and where will it go.  Dripping all through the unit?

No chance if you turn Compressor on it's side the oil will run out of the compressor and it'll seize also compressor is spring mounted internally and sideways could cause compressor to ground out, other thing you risk oil hydraulic lock which is why if you transport a fridge on it's side or back you should wait 24 hours with it upright so iol cand drain back to compressor. (Sorry 2 wordy, just don't).

If it is a matter of the unit not fitting in the window, a friend of mine has solved that problem with a short piece of insulated ductwork.

i had the same dilemma at an old apartment about 6 years ago - it had old vertical crank windows, and no way to put in a horizontal unit, so i had to bite the bullet on the vertical unit which cost $450 as compared to the $200 horizontal unit.    >:(

It's not that hard to rough-in an openng for a A/C unit, I've even removed the window (save the pieces for future re-use) and mounted in the opening. It's not like you're going to want to open that window again.
