'72 750 Paint Color, Which One?
« on: May 09, 2012, 08:05:14 pm »
So, I finally got the bike tuned and cleaned up, but the paint does need a good paint refresh.  I am really inclined to go with Planet Blue Metallic, as I already have a red one, but Sunrise Flake Orange is gorgeous too.   It is currently Briar Brown Metallic, which is the original paint (not crazy about brown) Thoughts?

Love Planet Blue, it's a K5 color, but doesn't make a difference.

I was looking at a color scheme online, but it said that '72 colors were Planet Blue, Flake Sunrise, Brier Brown and Candy Gold.  Is Planet Blue not a '72 color?  I definitely want to be true to the year.

Planet blue is a correct production 750 K2 color. It was first sold in other markets, then released to USA market on the 750 K5.

Here’s a UK market planet blue K2 example, note the tank stripe, standard euro bars and black english taillight:

Note the 750 K2 colors taken from my Honda 750 parts book dated 12/71, (the Japanese market K2 colors are another story)

Thanks for the replies.  Am I being too obsessive if I choose not to do Planet Blue, because it is a U.S. bike?  I really love that color though.

Just tell everyone it's a UK import.   ;) ;D

I would expect that the UK would have had a "British" MPH speedo.  We still did in Canada at that time, and we weren't even a part of the United Kingdom...just a part of the British Empire.  Since then we have switched over to metric.  Do you mean that you Yanks are still running in miles?  (Must mean you're still part of the Empire. ;) ;D)

You sound like you have reservations about blue, if you don't want a blue bike, don't paint it blue, don't give yourself anything to regret, especially with the price of paint.

I think the candy gold with the black stripe is the most striking of the color combinations & offers the most pop IMHO. I wish my K5 had candy gold as an option- I would get it painted tomorrow!

It also might be an easier color to spot in traffic than the Planet Blue.

Good luck!

I have the same problem with my K2.  Cant decide which color.  Mine is currently orange, but I
don't really like that color.  If I picked one of the US K2 colors it would have to be Candy Gold.
The best looking to me is the Planet Blue, but that would be incorrect for a US K2.  I will
be interested to see what your poll shows.  How much do you think it hurts resale value
for a totally stock 750 if it is painted a color that was for another year?   I also like Candy
Blue Green and Candy Ruby Red, but that would also be wrong for a K2.

Unless you are doing a 100 point concours restoration, I do not think it will hurt your resale price.
Plus, not you want your bike to look the best for you, not the next owner?
Most importantly, for highest resale dollar, get quality paint work.

Sorry to keep dragging this thread out, but I think I've decided to stay true to the year of the bike.  Since this is a US bike, my options are limited.  One thing I'm confused about is the color codes in this table.

http://www.motorcycleproject.com/motorcycle/text/lubrtech.html

It only shows 2 color codes for the '72 year.  I thought Candy Gold Metallic was another option for this year in the US?  Is this not the case?

No worries. Honda used two different candy gold's for the USA market CB750 bikes.

The 1969-70-71 used color code: CQ and paint code: Y-2C and was called Candy gold.

The 1972 used color code: LX and paint code: Y-2C-C and was called Candy gold custom.

Some will say that there is no visual difference between the two candy golds.  :o

I was wondering what that Candy Gold Custom was.  I saw it listed in the parts manual and thought
it was a special order or something.  That also answers the question of why Candy Gold always seems
to look lighter or darker on different bikes.  It looks like the Candy Gold Custom is a little darker.

DYLBOSS,  I'm in the same boat as you with my K2.  I like the blue, but want my bike to be correct
for a US model.  I will probably go with the Candy Gold.  The two Golds are really close, so I guess
I could go with either one.  Looking at the picture that Hinomaru posted I think I like the darker
color of the Candy Gold Custom.  The problem may be getting a paint shop to match one or the other accurately
