can i depress clutch rod by hand??

'71 cb350 clutch not engaging.  makes a popping/clicking sound when cable is adjusted properly. 

with the engine off and the cable removed/cover off, should i be able to depress the clutch lifter rod by hand??

i can not, and i think that's a problem? but what problem??

I wouldn't have thought so, it's impossible to do on the 550 without some sort of lever. Maybe your mechanism is slipping, check the mechanism inside the clutch cover.

thanks les.  that's what i was hoping. 

maybe my plates are stuck? bike sat for a while.  i'll follow some of the unsticking threads.

Sure, if you can press the rod with about 50-100 pounds of pressure.   ;D

The actuator mechanism and the bar lever supply a mechanical advantage whereby pressure is magnified/traded for distance movement.  Something it the order of 10:1 or more, as an off-hand guess.
Clutch lifter movement 1/10 of an inch.  Bar lever movement 1-2 inches?

Are you confusing clutch engagement (lever released) with disengagement (lever applied)?

Stuck plates, one to another, would be "engaged".

TT, you are correct, and thats a nice description.  i believe i have got it sorted out, just ran through the gears on center stand.  won't know for sure until i can get out and ride, which will have to wait for ....ahem... tires, handlebars, headlight, grips, throttle, brake rebuild.... whewww.
