Lately I find it's the scooter riders that I've been seeing who seem to be the most oblivious and unsafe.
If they have any gear on it's generally only a helmet and they're almost always speeding.

I didn't think these scooters were capable of speeding ;D The one's I always end up behind are are always holding up traffic. Most always have fullface helmets on, but most are not even strapped.

It's downtown that I see them most often. Speeding in 25-35mph zones.  Yeah, they don't get out on the highway much but some of those new scooters can haul ass on the flat.

The day before yesterday I was pulling out of a parking space on my street.  I looked in my rear view, started to roll out, looked down at my gear shifter and put it in D instead of 2, got out into the street, looked up and saw my neighbor on his duck right behind me.  I stopped at the light, he rolled up next to me and I rolled down my window, "hey I'm sorry Logan I pulled right out in front of you, I of all people should know better"... Evidently he was going pretty fast because he said, "Oh you're ok you didnt do anything wrong, I saw you pulling out and I saw you look"  I didnt see him, and I was lookng for cars, bikes, dogs, people anything before I pulled out.

I've found it weird to transition from riding a M/C where you have SO MUCH vision all the way around  ;D to getting into my "cage" w/ all it's steel around me and then trying to still see around me with so many blind spots.
We as bikers ought to be able to be the most careful drivers of all w/ that much vision.
I can usually tell what they want to do before they do it on the bike...as long as I'M Looking  :o ::) ! Thank God for miracles & angels..it's why I'm still alive.

In two-vehicle crashes between a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle in 2005, in 1,334
(74%) of the crashes the motorcycle was recorded as the striking vehicle, compared to
470 (26%) of crashes where the passenger vehicle was recorded as the striking vehicle.

What are you trying to say with this excerpt?
Who hits who does not indicate fault.
Out of three fatalities that I knew, 2 were of the rider hitting the car and both were the cagers fault.
One was younger and one was old and wise.
The 3rd was old, wise recently divorced and drunk, he crashed solo.
I'm in that 74%. Hit a cager turning left across my lane.

Good thread, I don't wanna rain on the parade.
Just sayin add some background to that excerpt.
Austin is just thick with young kids on scooters in shorts and flipflops,  crotch rockets too.
I see all that bare skin and I just go OUCH!

Ride Safe Ya'll ;)
Steve

Very true, I interpreted it as fault. Regardless, the study as a whole has some interesting statistics.

I'm afraid they do mate, and like Trueblue said, flip flops as well, the only thing they don't seem to wear is their brain..... :o

Sorry. Late back to this, but SQUID I always understood as Stupid QUIck Dead. Interpretations may vary, but they generally go along with the invincible attitude of motorcycling with beginners. Lots of speed, no experience and no protection. Hate to say I was one of these for a short period of time, but as luck would have it, the times that I had my incidents, I happened to be dressed appropriately. Looking at what asphalt does to leather was a big determining factor for me! Have had road rash on my calf (actually did it through jeans?) and care not to have it again or anywhere if i can help....which i can! Boots are also an important part. Had my crappy little shoes fly off twice! Definitley be careful out there. Got buddies who ride Harleys that laugh at my attire, but making mistakes is one thing, not learning from them is another.

Found this on Advrider. It's a PSA from I belive New Zealand.
It's a little gory.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=s7xOPTBaTbY

Texas has a PSA running that's pretty damn good. I think it gets to what cagers do.
Also, is this a nationwide PSA thats rebranded for Texas.

I like the skid marks and boot laying in the road.

"The suspect had experienced a ballistic interlude earlier in the evening" Miss Pao said, "Regrettably not filmed, and relived himself of excess velocity by means of an ablative technique."         ......    ?    ........         "She say you have road rash."
