Your thoughts on Carb choice for a 592.
« on: May 30, 2012, 08:35:13 PM »
Finally have all the parts for my motor and im putting it together. I was wondering what you guys think would be the best carb to run.
Motor is a cb550
Dynoman 592 Hot street piston
Webcam 58B
Mild ported head
4-4 open pipes
Dyna 2000

My options are a set of
CB550 PD carbs
CB550 carbs off a 75
or I can have a set Bored out
or i can spend big coin on a set of CR but i dont really want to.

Bike is not a track bike, it will be ridden on the street.

Is it worth it to bore out carbs and still run them on the street?
Which set is better the early or later cb550 carbs?

I have looked at those but the rebuild kits are almost half of what a cr rack would cost.

ok, maybe not. About 100. I am looking at converting my 550 pd carbs to have a pump. Maybe i could use a 650 carbs with the 550 spacers.

VM26's off things like GS750's and some kwaks, cheap, way cheaper than VM28's. they are actually 27, flow well and ultra solidly built (weighty too), spacing is spot-on for straight, non kinked manifolds too on a 550 :)

boring out is really asking for jetting nightmares , you are out on your own, costly, risky, need more? :) I started once only to discover the amount of trouble was not worth the effort

It always depends on what you're looking for. The 592 I built for my wife pulls an honest 115mph, and accelerates really quickly with stock PD46's. If you're roadracing these are not large enough but for a useable powerband on the street, just enhanced over original, stock carbs will give it to you.

As it happens, I have a set of VM26s in nice condition laying around, if you're interested.  I have them along with a set of manifolds for a CB750, not sure what the fitment is like for a 550.

For now Im going to stick with the stock PD carbs to get it running but will keep my eye out for those VMs on ebay. I also just bought a second set of PD carbs that im going to try and add an accelerator pump to. We shall see how that works out.

i went a bit crazy after HP so built a fully downdrafted, angle matched adapters, but its over the top. just find a friendly machinist to turn you simple 'hats' with a large flange to bolt them and connect them to the VM's with stock 500/550 rubbers

Would the round top CB750 carbs not be a good option?  I've read they're a good alternative, and I think they have 26mm throats as well.

they'd cost several times more than VM26's (actually 27's) IMHO

Keep mind I wasn't suggesting the K0 type carbs, just the round-top version.  I've seen good workable sets go for $100.  Sure they needed fiddling, but there ya go.
