new neck bearings
« on: May 11, 2012, 08:06:57 PM »
I pulled the neck out of my cb750 project frame. Bearings are toast. Where do you get a tapered bearing set that I've heard about and are there any guides to installing them or any tips? Thanks

You can buy the sets such as the All Balls set that comes with the seal for ~ $35 if you're lucky to $50+ or you can get individual bearings from a bearing supplier then a seal from Honda. 30 X 50 X 14 and 26 X 48.5 X 16. My boxes say Pyramid Parts. EBay I believe. ~ $25?? You can destroy the old races getting them off if you'd like but find a driver to tap the new bearings in place. We used my old tapered bearing races to press against the new bearing races then tapped in place. Put the new bearings in the freezer for a while to cause the metal to contract making that hole slightly larger. You can even put the steering head in too. Be damn sure you have the correct spacer in place with the seal before you install the lower bearing! You'll know by how the steering head lock mechanism on the triple fits against the one on the frame. If it fits only slightly then your spacer is too thick. It's a #$%* to remove the bearing and you may destroy it. My 75 750F used only a very thin spacer. Think this spacer is more of a seal protector than actual spacer.

+1 to every single word Jerry said. I just replaced mine a couple weekends ago and it was a similar experience. I was able to just pop the old races out of the steering column with a screw driver and a couple light hits from a hammer.

I'm also still finding little bearings around my garage from when they fell...

Here are just a few of the relevent threads I found using the search function. The first is an extensive 22-page discussion, the others cover the subject as well:

Hi Jerry,

I got the Pyramid bearing too, but they don't come with seals or spacers.  Do you know where I can get the spacer and seal.  Also, do you know what size I would need I have a 1976 CB750.

Honda should be able to pull them from their warehouses. Take the part numbers to your dealer. Order and give 'em a week.

53214-250-000  DUST SEAL, STEERING HEAD

53215-250-000  WASHER, STEERING HEAD DUST SEAL ***********(not really a spacer)************

for 1976 CB750K - cost you ~$4

Thanks for the parts numbers.  I will hunt around as motogrid wants $16 for shipping.  Wish I had just gotten the all balls kit.

You can get a kit from Z1 Enterprises.

I got the pyramid parts.  the bearings are poor quality, even though the kit came with the seals.   I used the all balls kit, with a thin spacer on the bottom, and had to make a thin spacer for under the top nut.

Ok, here is a pic of the pyramid bearing I got.  Not sure what to do with now.  Thinking I might put it back on Ebay maybe someone can make it work for their bike.  Rather have the Allballs kit. Do you ever go riding in Upstate NY at all?  If so hit me up and we'll cruise around.

Darn, wish I had known before I ordered another set. I'm always up for a bargain  ;) I installed my Pyramid set and it's smooooth. I don't have any issues with mine except I didn't get seals. That stuff added another $3 -4 to the price.

I wasn't suggesting ordering from Motogrid, just throwing out some easy info for you. Shipping on small items has gotten prohibitive. That's why I punch in my order to my local Honda online then go down every Tuesday to pick my stuff up.

Jerry,

Thanks for the info I will hit up my local honda dealer.  They don't like old bikes, but maybe I can get lucky and charm the counter girl.  Didn't work at the UPS store today they still jacked up the shipping price.

How's your Kerker project going?  I lucked out and got what looks like a Kerker on a 75 CB750 with 9,500 original miles.  I am thinking of selling the bike and keeping the exhaust.  Love the sound of that thing.

Chewy,

Just walk in there and hand them the part numbers and tell them you need them to order a couple parts for you. If you act like you know what you're doing you'll know more than they do  ;D They don't like older bikes - exactly, that's why we give them part numbers! Plus they don't know SOHC's like we do. No shipping charges if you pick them up. You wait for their next order to show up in a week and you're ready.

Fargin Kerker and some wise asses here  :) last thing I wanted to do was #$%* something else up I didn't understand. Never had a Kerker apart before and they are pricey. Maybe the guys give me TOO much credit lmao. After seeing pictures of both ENTIRELY different baffles I now understand I gotta beat the #$%* outta the collector end and pull that long sonna#$%* out and put shorty in. Kinda reminds me of 2 strokin' the ex  ;D Can't get back to it probably until Sunday though. I'm itching to fire that muther up!

Yeah, I don't blame you for asking either these things are rather pricey.  The guy I bought the bike from was offered $300 just for the exhaust.  Be sure to post video if you can I love the sound of those things.  Makes the whole bike sound angry in a good way.

I'll probably go with the all-balls kit. I read that 22 page thread a lot of good info in there. They said you don't even really need a bottom seal and stuff like that. Hopefully I can get the races out of my neck I tried pounding on them a little yesterday with no luck. Need a bigger hammer I guess!
