Will the top two rims on this page lace up to CB400F front and rear hubs with stock sized spoke sets?

From other posts it appears that it wouldn't be an issue as the xs650 rims supposedly do.

stock cb400f are wm1 front, wm2 rear 36 spoke. 18in for both

these are 18in wm2 and wm3 also 36 spoke

No one has replied.

The reason is that each manufacturer and each model has hubs with different design of hub flanges and hubs.

Why don't you ask the experts...Buchanen Wheels.

If its a mag, the axle size on XS is bigger and uses 6 bolt brake mount same as 750 & Ducati.
Wire wheel bigger axle I think and is 36 hole.. might be rite for 400 but 750 is 40 hole...

I agree sun and excel rims are nice, and Buchanan is the place to go for a no issue perfectly setup rim hub spoke combo, but it comes at a high cost.

I'm looking for a solution that doesn't cost $800+ . . .

And these are just rims, not mags. I'd be using the stock cb400f hubs.

Yamaha used tasagko (spelling?) flanged 19"alloy rims on a few 650s in 36 hole.. i offered mine to an SR500 owner that wanted wire,.. for like 75 or so bux.. and he HAD TO THINK ABOUT IT... !! rim has some marking up..
THEN I woke up and realized, I neverr have to loot to pay 200 plus shipping for a rim.. so I will keep it..

They are out there though..

I like those MikesXS shouldered rims;has anyone here spoken w/ Mike's like a customer service or parts rep. ? I wonder if they can give any Tech. support to tell you what applications the rims are drilled for ? I wonder who manufactured these ?

if they are for similar size hubs you may be OK, BUT some rims are drop center which changes spoke length.. try to get a measurement from inside of rim where the holes are to compare to yours..plus the size of the drilled holes.. if they cant mesure accurately tell them to grab a drill index if they have one and tell you which drill fits the hole the best..

I'd like to order a pair of 'em for my bike too...hope to know if they'll lace up w/ stock O.E. spokes for the CB400F.

At least the stock spokes won't work. So lucky is right. I should ask Buchanan; they should be able to put together a set of spokes. It will likely be around 80-100 per wheel for the spokes, but the total cost will be much less than buying Excel or Sun Rims.

You'd figure there would be a spoke/rim/hub calculator where you plug in different measurement values e.g. hub width, rim diameter, spoke length, drilled hole angle, number of spokes, etc and get a result. Unfortunately I don't know all the different variables that would need to go into that equation. . . .

I was looking at the MikesXS site and I think the XS shouldered rims of 1.85x18 WM2 for the front & 2.15x18 WM3 for the rear will work.I'm willing to give it a go for them to lace right up to my CB400F hubs front & rear.I believe the spoke holes may be a little larger than the original spoke holes in my O.E. rims which may cause me to have to get some special spoke nipple washers possibly from Buchannans... & I was just wondering about that WM2 front XS650 shouldered rim..,if it was drilled to work with a disc front hub as I have on my CB400F or the larger drum front hub as they say on their site that the same rim will also fit the older XS400's which I believe has a front drum brake up until the 1977' model when they went over to Mags front & rear.I'll need to call MikesXS to confirm that w/ one of their customer service reps.

YES.
I fitted XS rear WM3 rims on one of my CB360's which are pretty much same hubs as CB400f
Modified CB360 hub with WM3x18" MX rim.

MX rims use larger diameter spokes/nipples so you need washers under nipple heads

Hub after mods and polishing

Modified rear hub with XS 650 rim

The angle of drillings are perfect for CB350 drum front brake but need slight file 'adjustment' for disc hub
Use a chainsaw file, only takes a couple of mins for the entire rim

I have another pair of XS 650 rims I'm going to fit to disc hub, it's a crazy amount of work to polish old rims though
I very nearly just bought the WM2 for the front, but, checked my paypal account first and cancelled

Where can I buy those special spoke nipple washers? I'd rather buy them then make them for now.I wanted to ask how you modified the CB360 front disc hub that went to the wheels you have pictured ? Do you know if those shouldered rims are lighter weight than the Excel dirt bike rims you have there ? I don't think I would need the extra built-in strength of the dirt bike rims on my light weight street bike application & I would prefer the lighter weight rim the best.I also Love the shouldered style rims..,reminds me of old classic race bikes of the past & Mark Brelsford's XR750 HD track bike in some of those shot's taken by some of the old cycle mags back when I was younger;they bring back good memories & are Beautiful when the sun hits them.I'll just need to keep the rain from corroding my "Rain Catchers" and wipe them out regularly.

The rims are all about the same weight, paint or powder coat does add a bit but probably still lighter than original narrow steel rims
I turned the ribs off front hub as they are not really needed for strength or cooling with disc brake (I wouldn't do a rear though)
I make the washers, made a set for someone on here a few months ago, PM me if you want some

So the xs650 rims lace up to the stock cb400f/cb350f drum brake hubs (but not the front disc brake hub from the 400) with the stock spokes, with the help of dished washers?

Yes.
It fits to disc brake hub without any issues as well
I 'lost' a couple of bids on eBay so ended up buying a 'set' from Mikes

Thanks for offering those tapered washers;are they brass ? in the picture they look brass which I think is good.

Rims arrived yesterday, they look pretty good.
Looks like they are anodised?
If so,they may fade in a few years although it's a possibility it's powder coated?
Either way, they look good at present
The nipple washers are brass, I think there is less chance of corrosion with brass washers compared to stainless steel? (aluminium reacts with just about everything though

)

Honda used brass washers on the steel CL72 & CL77 19-inch flanged rims...............I also re-lace XS alloy rims to Honda hubs...........and use the 'old' brass washers that I salvaged from old CL wheels............yes, a lightly applied hole-file will help, but using the larger diameter shouldered HONDA spokes and nipples with the washers really adds strength.

BTW........the first year or two of the Yamaha xs750 also used those rims...........and are sometimes found at swapmeets for CHEAP.

I forget exact numbers but I think the WM3 XS rim was almost a pound lighter than the original WM1 steel rim
I posted it somewhere but it was at least 2~3 yrs ago

FYI the estimated quote I got for stainless spokes from Buchanan was $113 per 36 spoke set (9-10 or 8-10 ga). Good to hear that they are quality rims. I will be ordering up a set when I find some extra cash. I may just go with ebay zinc or cadmium spoke sets (hoping the powdercoat or anoidising prevents any galvanic corrosion).

Regular wax on the front and chain oil on the rear seems to have worked to keep the spokes and nipples clean and shiney for longer than 40-years. Of course if you plan to 'park' the bike for several years in poor storage conditions..............rust and corrosion seem to take over.

Dennis, in Classic motorcycle or cycles, there is something on road america.. has a pic, of a row of bikes and you are standing in front.. just saying..

has a John Player Norton on the cover i think...
