Gearing question; K7 16T/48T
« on: May 27, 2012, 09:59:31 AM »
Having just rebuilt the engine on my K7 I'm now running it in and have noticed the gearing is lower than standard. The PO fitted a 16T front, which, together with the 48T rear gives me gearing that I believe is about 12% lower than standard. The bike has a 530 chain. A couple of questions:

Can anyone confirm the K7 is standard with 18T / 48T? David Silver says it should be 15 / 41 and a 630 chain so I want to be confident I'm getting the right parts if I buy sprockets on the internet

With 1000km on the clock it's really starting to boogey and even though it was revving high to my ear (4000rpm at 90km/h) it sounded happy - in fact it clearly loves to rev. Opinions please - is it worth changing the front sprocket back to 18T or should I just let it sing?!?

Most of my riding is club days (its on restricted club plates), not much freeway riding, mostly windy roads around 100km/h.

cheers

I would stick to the 530 chain. 16 tooth will wear the chain faster than a 17 or 18.. you decide if its worth it. Going bigger on rear allows larger front sprocket , but requires longer chains than you use now.

I'd go 17/48 for scooting around town My preference is 18/48 on the big  road.

I would go back to the stock gearing. At 70mph you would be doing about 4K. I find gearing like that makes the bike too jumpy even around town. I stayed with the 630 chain because it is simpler and I think it look better also. Many would disagree.

Yes, that is the stock K7 setup. I'm running  17/48 530 on my K1, and used to run a 16/48. That combination did get a bit buzzy cruising above 70 MPH...
