Go to where ever there is a mirror in the house and look in it and then go to your garage.    You have met the mechanic and visited the shop.  Seriously!
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

Hit the nail square on the head.
Jr. these sohc4's are fairly simply machines and any thing you need to know from A to Z can be found right here on this forum and plenty of other members that's been there done that and are more than happy to help and give you good advice. Ive done things to might KO and K6 I never thought I could do, but I have. And what a good feeling it gives you to be able to repair and work on your own bike, because you know its done right and the labor rate is the cheapest I know of anywhere ;) ;)

While I can somewhat agree with your statement (about feeling good about doing your own work), speaking for myself, I don't have the mechanical aptitude to know that what I do to the engine will be done right.  When it comes to bringing a 30+ year old engine back to life, I feel a lot better knowing that a professional mechanic whose done these older rebuilds many times in the past (and has the right tools at their disposal) has gone through my engine to make it like/ better than new.  In the process of "rebuilding" an older bike, I've come to realize my limitations and to accept them.  Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that given enough time (researching this forum and reading Hondaman's book, manuals, etc.) I could more than likely figure things out... at least to some degree.  But still, I wouldn't know it was done right. For me it's peace of mind knowing that someone who really knows their stuff rebuilt my engine.

I would rather start with a clean slate (a fresh engine) and perform any minor upkeep/ future tinkering myself.  While the internals of an engine fascinate me, I'd rather leave dealing with the guts of the SOHC to an expert.  When I started this build, I had it in my mind that I was going to take the "do everything myself" route.  As the months ticked away and riding seasons came and went, frustration set in and I simply wanted a bike to ride.  Slowly realizing that I wasn't going to get it done, I found a very knowledgeable mechanic with older CB experience who I trust completely.  By using his expertise, I know it'll be done right.  Sure, it's going to cost me more in the end, but like I said before, that peace of mind is more than worth it to me.

I think it's awesome that many of you guys can confidently wrench on the internals of your bikes, but that's simply not me.  And from what I've seen (on my bike and from reading others' experiences on this forum) there have been a lot of PO's out there that should have taken their bikes to their local mechanics to start with rather than looking in the mirror.

i'm with you, nomad - the thought of messing with my engine is a little too intimidating to me.  although the more rebuild threads i read and the more youtube vids i watch about it, the less scary the thought becomes.

still, if i didn't think i could do it properly, i'd hand it off to a pro.   self-made mistakes seem to be more costly than just taking it to the shop.
