Chopping my Sandcast 750
« on: May 08, 2012, 03:03:08 PM »
Just kidding. I'm trying to replace a lower casing from a 73 K model. I know the later models change a bit in 76-78, but are those lower ends still compatible with my frame and jugs?

That's the fastest reply I've ever had here!  Probably get alot of response but maybe counter productive for getting an answer. We'll see, I guess.

I really don't think that a Sandy top/bottom cases will fit anything other than the sandy.
If you do change the engine then you WON'T have the originallity/stock parts of the Sandy which is why you buy a Sandy to begin with!!!!!!

It's not really a Sandcast; I just put that in the title to send the purists grappling for their nitro tabs. Thanks for the response though, I seem to have hit a deeper nerve.

in response to your original question..i believe you want to replace your lower case half? if so it may not be possible since i do believe (some one will tell me if i am wrong) are matched sets. has to do with the different main bearing sizes from the factory.
as far as your title..kinda funny.. good way to stir the #$%* pot with a canoe paddle!

You are correct- I need to replace the bottom half because dropped the engine trying to he-man it up onto a rickety table, and broke off the oil filter housing. And I have a locker full of canoe paddles;)

The above is correct because of the main bearing sizes will be mismatched.  You need to replace both top and bottom.  They're measured at the factory and assigned letters to denote the size of the opening.  The only way to switch a bottom only is to find a case with exact same letters i.e. same bearing sizes.

In that case, I'd be looking for a complete lower set that would bolt up with my jugs and work with my frame, right? I guess specifically, would those lowers from the late 70's work with the earlier models; they seem to be easier to get ahold of here in Central TX.

77'-78' lower end does not work in 69'-76' frame without some swingarm, wheel spacer, and/or offset sprocket swapping...i.e. the countershaft sprocket 0f the 77'-78' bottom end will be 10mm outboard from where the 69'-76' rear sprocket runs...CycleX sells 10mm offset rear sprocket to make this swap work
If it works good, it looks good...

Thanks for the source on the offset sprocket- may end up being the key. One follow up just to be sure: will the top end from my 73 bolt up to a '77 / '78 without having to mill oil passages or other serious mods?

I've ignored this thread because it looked like it just wanted a reaction. Change the title, you will get more help.  JMHO.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

I got some other input from a buddy that has a couple of k's- he said the k7's had a different countershaft and seals from the earlier. So im pretty sure the guts from my lower(73) cant be used in a Later case (k7+) right?  I'm thinking it's going less headache in the long run to wait for a match than to try to force one.

How bad is the damage?  If it is at all repairable that is your best route.

Post a pic of the damage.

I didnt  feel like it's repairable because I broke the threaded part (female) that holds the filter and housing on to the casing. It was pretty bad. I thought it would be easier to find a donor. But something has happened in the past 2 years that has caused everybody to start waxing their mustaches and gobbling up the 750's to park in front of the whole foods store. They used to be free for the hauling... I guess I'll explore that avenue... Build it up and re-tap it; that would just be real hard bc I'm sure I no longer have the piece that broke off.
I also got an offer for a trade for a bottom end from a 77f. Probably a near miss as well? (I posted another thread about it- sorry for the overpost, going to blame it on the search not working...)
I'd really like to finish this one
