CB750 wiring - headlight/starter issue?
« on: June 20, 2006, 07:03:35 AM »
I am struggling to piece together the hacked up wiring on my CB750 F1 (European spec.) restoration.  I have been going through the French model wiring diagram (http://sohc4.us/files/WiringCB750French.pdf) but have a few problems.  I am trying to get the basics working first - starter, headlight, brake/tail light and turn signals.  Note that the bike is not running - I am testing this when the bike is on but motor not running.

Turn signals - function correctly
Brake/tail light - function correctly
Starter - worked until this morning! (when I was trying unsuccessfully to hook up the idiot lights for neutral/oil)
Headlight - worked once (high and low beam) for a few minutes and then did not work when I turned the ignition off and on again!

Does anyone have any ideas why the headlight worked only briefly and why the starter has stopped working?  Could the 2 issues be related?  I figure I must be getting close if they worked even briefly!

Thanks for any help on this.

With American market right side switches, the headlight is controlled (as in switched off when the starter motor is operated) by the starter button. That is not the case with the switch shown on this diagram. Do you have the French style or some other switch with a separate headlight control or an American switch on the bike?

The right hand control pod has a switch for the headlight - P/H (Parking/High?).  The left hand pod has the standard low beam/high beam switch.

In that case, it would be wired the same as or similar to the diagram you included. It is difficult to see where the two conditions might have the same cause although it may be possible - I didn't look at the entire circuit, just the switch area.
(Just went back and quickly looked at the diagram again. It might be possible for both circuits to lose power at a loose connection. )
I would suspect that you are most likely looking at 2 individual conditions. Best way to go, IMO, would be to pick one and start troubleshooting it. When you find the cause you will then know if they are related. Then you can find the other one.
