Late 70s cb650 field find
« on: May 14, 2012, 03:33:11 PM »
Ive owned a few DOHC Hondas, but no SOHCs yet and I have no clue what a bike in this shape is worth.

Its been sitting in a field for about 10 years, tank, seat, carbs, and a few other bits are gone and of course hes lost the title.

So what would you pay for a bike in this condition?

$50 to $100 not much more.  One of the best I got was an 81 CB650 that sat in some guys yard for who knows how long.  They are out there.  Make sure you get a title too.  Its another 300 to 400 for a title not worth it for that bike IMO.  There are others that don't have shrubbery growing out of them with a title for a few bills.

I wouldn't pay anything for it unless I specifically needed some parts off it that it still has and are still any good.  I'd kindly offer to haul it away for him at no charge.

In my opinion that is a parts bike at best.  With no title, missing the tank, seat, and carburators, and maybe more, it's not going to be an easy or cheap fix up.  Carburetors being gone for years probably mean the intake valves are rusted in place and the open cylinder could have sat with water in in for years.   No more than a hundred bucks.  You can get that or more out of the cam, cam drive and tach if its present.  They are sought after.

I paid $30 for one, $50 for another. Both in similar condition to that one. One with a good engine, one with a blown engine.

Well first your not going to restore that bike.  And if you did, no title would mean you couldn't get tags for it.  The major pieces you need for it would cost more then a running bike just like it.

I would tell him you will hall it out of there for him and give him 1$ so you have a bill of sale.  Then you could have some fun pulling it down and seeing just how bad it really is.  I'm sure you could pull it apart and sell some of the parts to make it worth your time to strip and clean.

I think only the '79 & '80 cams are a boost for the cb550's :-\

'79 through '82 have the same part number for the cam. The German ones had a different cam that was not an upgrade for the 550.

That is a rare East Essex smallleaf Ivy!

Quick! Buy it and sell the cuttings!

Or not. Sorry, been posting a lot because of crazy work hours with my boss hospitalized last week.

Don't mind me or my wit(less) comments...

alright, there are 17 hondas in his yard, 2-3 SOHCs 2 650s and a 750, a couple DOHCs 79-82 (2 are 900fs, 1 with a title)

theres 1 V4 and a bunch of parallel twins that I dont know much about.

So is anything here worth anything? Or am I better off just searching CL for a complete 900f?

He wants 2200 for all 17 of them but wont include anything that isnt on the frame as they sit. (There are a few tanks and headers lying around the yard.)

These are 650 cams from somewhere on this site.

Corrected my post... 79 was the same part number as well. The 50 HP was a German one.

I love restoring bikes and very rarely find anything I cannot bring back to life BUT....that is a wreckers yard full of PARTS!
True he should be shot and cut into small pieces for not garaging every one of them but none are worth the restore in my opinion.
I'd offer him $100 for the lot just to clear his yard, if you find that SOHC4 750 I wouldn't mind a photo but amongst the foliage I couldn't see it.
As someone else suggested, go find something salvagable on CL that has a title and the chance of making you a happy motorcyclist. :)
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

The 750 is there, just not in a pic, its at his shop. (But also outside and w/o a tank)

He sells parts for late model sport bikes for a living, so I think its just in his mind that he has to get some kindof price for any parts he sells.

I had planned to part out a few of the bikes and making cafes/retro super bikes out of a few of them, but now Im not sure its worth it.

+1, too many parts appear to be missing to make any kind of offer other than maybe just to haul it away.

Looking at the additional pics you posted, those are not part bikes. They are nothing more than junk. Walk or run away, he's going to need to spend $ 300.00 - $ 400.00 just to get someone to haul that trash away.

I think the guys has been watching "pickers" too much.  The bikes with titles are worth about $500 a peice because there are a lot of people out there looking to get titles.  The rest isn't worth anything until you strip them down and part them out.  And you have no idea what parts are good until you take them apart.
