Well my second effort cleaning the carbs worked but before I started on the carbs I questioned how clean the gas tank really was.I drained some gas from the tank into a clear container and let it sit for awile and sure enough after an hour or so I started to see very fine rust in the bottom of the container.
I drained the tank into the lawnmores gas can and used a coffee filter and a funnel the filter caught alot of very fine silty rust.
I had changed the gas lines and installed a new filter after my first carb cleaning but I left the original hose that goes to the carbs fuel inlet in place.Im sure in hindsight that was a mistake as that part of the hose probably had the silty fine rust in it.
When I took the carbs off the second time all the bowls had a rusty hue to them.I was trying to figure out how this could have happened as I changed all the lines with clear tubing{except the one attatched from the carb to the filter} and installed a new conical filter.
So my wife comes out to the garage and looks into the bowls and gets this wtf look and asked how that could have happened.I said remember that line that comes off the carbs that we didnt replace because we couldnt get our hands down there when the carbs were back on the bike.... duh.But at this point I still thought my tank was rust free because when I took the cap off it looked clean and when I opened up the petcock after I put clear tubing from the petcock to the filter the gas seemed clear.
So during my carb cleaning I pulled the idle jets again used a guitar string and paid special attention to the accelerator pump system.I pulled off the three hoses that link the system together and blasted carb cleaner through the hose nipples and made sure I had a strong stream coming out of the accelerator pump nozzels.By the way, this is after I checked the main part of the system on carb #2.I replaced all three lines with clear tubing and made sure to put the brass restictor tubes into the new lines....that was a pita but I managed to get it done.I did a bench sync the first time so I didn't have to do that again.
Then I cleaned the tank using the Works Toilet bowl cleaner. It only took about thirty min and cost me 3.65 for two containers of the Works...easy.
Thanks again
