What do you guys think of the new tank?
« on: June 12, 2006, 01:11:21 PM »
Well my cafe project is slowly starting, i've got some clubmans on the way, and just got the new tank today. So I thought i'd post a few pics to see what you guys/gals think. It's not going to stay orange, but will have the circular indents filled up and the whole shebang will be black. So without further ado here are some pics.

nice orange there! Is it a fiberglass? I would lop the top off a little but it still is pretty nice. Looks like a cafe style to me. which works since that is what you are after ;D

Nice one!
If it was mine I would keep the round recesses and try to find some round, early Honda plastic epoxy-badges, like the ones on the Black Bomber for instance!
They are black with a gold Honda-wing and that would look really nice and subtle against the black tank!
Just an idea, take it or leave it :)

Cheers

yeah, the bars are gone asap. I bought the bike for a hundred bucks so I couldn't be too critical. Just planned to spend the $$$ I save on making a cool cafe out of it. The tank isn't fiberglass its a normal steel tank off of an old benelli. I kinda dig the orange, but also have been thinking of either a gloss black or a satin black, i'm leaning a bit more towards the satin at the moment, but who knows maybe i'll keep the orange for a while... I do dig DME's idea about the round honda badges... it came with round badges that say 260, but thats refering to the model bike the tank came from. Thanks for all the kind words!

That really is a unique gastank. It really gives the bike a different look. What kind of tank is it?
It is different but, I like it (like it matters if I like it or not). As for the bars, I'm not going there
because you asked what we thought about the tank and besides that you already said you had
clubmans on the way. I'll agree w/Daniel on the round recesses. It'd look special with the old
Honda emblems. Just my thoughts.       Later on, Bill

Looks great.  Did it slip right on or do you have modified mounts?  And I agree with the tank badges; loads 'o tank badges here --> http://search.ebay.com/honda-tank-badges_W0QQfromZR40

It's a tank from an old benelli 260. The tank slips on pretty easily, but needs something to keep it on. I'll probably fashion something that will use the original mounts, because the tank is actually the same length as the stocker. Thanks for the link ill check out some of the old round honda badges.

Love the tank, great idea to get older tank badges for her.

Re Benelli. Has been bought by a Chinese manufacturer for 7 billion Euros. This included taking on 50 billion Euros of debt.
Huge numbers but I believe the Italians subsidise some businesses. I hope I have my facts right, was reading about it just the other day.

I think that the Chinese will be same to motorcycling this decade as the Japanese were to motorcycling in the 1960's.

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Tank shape is nice. Reminisce of the vintage Norton tanks. Please tell me you are gonna do something serious with the paint on that tank and not make it "just another" solid color bike. :-\ I think you said something of black before in the thread. A Satin Black with a silver leaf lines that taper along with some trick lightly applied "engine turning" would make it pop! Why just have another black bike when you can do so much more?  8) Don't play with fire crackers when you have dynamite  ::)

Yeah I was thinking about doing a black outline of the knee indents and keeping the orange. Then I was also thinking about either black side covers with some sort of horizontal orange stripe, or a orange side cover with a black stripe. But it sure would look better if I could get the glue off  ;) Any takers on how to do this?

glue...ever try Goo-Gone?  It works on the sticky stuff, not sure on whatever glue you have there.  Or freeze the whole damn thing and see if it 'chips' off.

G'Day Mate, I saw your email and I'll answer you shortly, try some "Prep-wash" to remove the glue, it's a mild solvent used by pro automotive painters to remove adhesives, oil and wax etc from painted panels. If it doesn't shift it, I'll be very surprised. Cheers, Terry. ;D
