special size bolts
« on: June 13, 2006, 09:57:13 AM »
How do I figure out the special length bolts that go on the cover that slips over the gear shifter and covers up the gear stuff.   I think the person that owned the bike before me put some of the wrong bolts on there and now I can't get them to work properly, plus some are allen bolts and some are phillips head bolts...I figured they would all be phillips head.  Is there a way to find the exact lengths and demensions on those bols?  Are they replacable?

thanks

What bike are you talking about first off.  You need a parts manual - every bolt's size is in there.

dont know what bike you have, but i believe all old honda cases take screws sized at 6mm x 1.00 pitch. you can get replacements from a good hardware store. you can get phillips if you like, but it is a good idea to convert to allen head. they are easier to remove in the future wthout stripping the screw head. both of my bikes have been swithced over to allen head completely.

to find the length you need, remove the cover. measure how deep the hole through the cover is. measure the depth of the cover only. you are not measuring into the engine case. the cover should be off of the engine. you can stick a wire through the hole until it's end is flush with the other side. mark the wire, then pull it out and measure it. add 10mm to your measurement. that is the lenght you need. the 10 mm is the part that will thread into your engine case.

I just replaced mine last night and had the same problem.... I got the stainless set from jspillane on eBay - very nice BTW.
I found the exploded diagrams on http://www.crotchrocket.com/fiche_select.asp for my particular bike and matched them up that way.

Hope this helps!

Best way I've found is to get the proper diameter screw, grab the cover and head up to the hardware to select them, they stick through the cover roughly 1/4 inch, just measure the cover and use a screw 1/4 inch longer. has never failed me yet.
