Cam Tower Bolt Size
« on: April 23, 2012, 06:36:56 PM »
Anybody know the size and length of the #4 bolt shown in the picture.  I'm trying to find a replacement and honda has it on backorder.  None of the books I have mention the size.  It's BOLT, SHAFT STOPPER part 90052-300-000

63mm long, 5mm shaft, 16mm thread length... not sure about the thread pitch, I lost my gauge some time ago and haven't replaced it yet.

Did your replacement bolt fit, and if so what was the thread pitch?  I've got my original bolts but have stripped threads in the shaft so probably have to go the heli-coil route.

There is a fix for stripped threads using 1/4"-28 bolts. Some guys don't like sae bolts in their metric bike. Didn't bother me. Look in FAQ's

No, it's an M6 x 1.0.  The 63mm length is correct.  It also has a 10mm hex head.

I contemplated going the 1/4" route but instead I put in six helicoils in there and was able to torque it down to spec.  Those stripped threads  gave me the greatest source of frustration next to figuring out crank-pin and crankshaft bearing colours.

I can get a 9 mm length helicoil with the right dimensions (M6x1.0). Would it be best to use two (cut one of these to achieve the correct thread depth of 16mm) or just use one insert?  I've not used helicoils before so I'm not sure.  Or is there another combination out there I haven't found yet that would be better?

Just use one.  The length of the insert doesn't have to match the length of the thread on the screw.

I just used one.  If you use two then you run the risk of misaligning the thread between the two (not ligning up) and then you're really screwed (pun intended).

I think they are hardened. That's why they carry a special part number and not a standard hardware part number. Wouldn't keep me from using standard hardware, as i have in the past. Just saying...
